Cavan opened their Tailteann Cup campaign with a comfortable 2-20 to 1-14 win over Laois at Kingspan Breffni this afternoon.

Last year’s beaten finalists recovered from their shaky start that saw Evan O’Carroll hammering in the game’s first goal after nine minutes that put Laois 1-2 to 0-3 in front.

The hosts got points back through Gearoid McKiernan and James Smith before being awarded a 25th penalty that Paddy Lynch tucked away, sending his team towards a 1-10 to 1-8 lead at the interval.

Mickey Graham’s side bossed large portions of the second-half, hitting seven points in-a-row from the resumption, and although Laois would eventually respond with four on the trot it wasn’t enough to save them from an opening defeat.

Substitute Johnny McCabe sealed the deal for the Blues when he was sent through by Oisin Brady and fired in their second goal from close range, ensuring a winning start ahead of their trip to London for the second round next Saturday.
