Mike Quirke has resigned as Laois football manager in the wake of yesterday's Leinster SFC quarter-final drubbing by Westmeath.

The former Kerry midfielder labelled the performance in Tullamore as "pathetic", while Laois were also relegated from Division 2 of the Allianz Football League last month following a win-less campaign.

Quirke announced his decision to step down this afternoon, while the Laois County Board has thanked him for his service over the past two years.

"The players have shown fantastic commitment towards representing their county in the best possible way under very challenging circumstances and despite not getting the performances or results we craved this season, they can be proud of the effort and application they have shown throughout." the Tralee man said in a statement.

"I've made my decision at this stage to allow the County Board ample time to find new management in advance of county championship action resuming in the coming weeks and months."
