Galway captured their first Leinster U20 hurling championship title in five years thanks to an impressive 2-20 to 2-11 win over holders Kilkenny at O’Moore Park, Portlaoise last night.

Jack Shaughnessy (1-7) and Vince Morgan supplied the goals as the Tribesmen secured their third Leinster triumph in the grade and moved into the All-Ireland against Clare on Sunday week in Thurles (2pm).

The sides were level on 0-2 each when Shaughnessy rattled the Cats’ net in the eighth minute and, while Ed Lahoff’s goal levelled, points by Brian Callanan, Shaughnessy and Cullen Killeen later in the half would help Gavin Keary's side hold a 1-11 to 1-7 lead come the break.

Shaughnessy (free) and Ronan Cahalan increased the Tribe lead after the change of ends, with Anthony Clifford and Patrick Lacey (free) shooting over at the other end, Cullen and Jason Rabbitte pushed Galway back into a five-point lead before another Shaughnessy free put half a dozen between the sides with just over 10 minutes remaining.

Keary's lads pushed the margin out to seven prior to Vince Morgan blasting in their second goal while on his knees to all but secure the win ahead of Ruarc Sweeney netting a consolation goal for Kilkenny before the final whistle.
