Kilkenny defender Joey Holden has announced his retirement from inter-county hurling.

The Ballyhale Shamrocks clubman confirmed his decision on Twitter last night, writing: “A great week celebrating with my club. But time now to bring an end to my time with Kilkenny.

“Many great memories especially the honour to represent Ballyhale and Kilkenny in lifting the Liam McCarthy. Thanks to all who have helped along the way, now onto the next chapter.”

Holden was the last man to captain Kilkenny to All-Ireland SHC glory in 2015 after the Cats backed up their previous year’s Liam MacCarthy Cup success.

The 31-year-old’s announcement comes days after club mate Colin Fennelly confirmed his own inter-county retirement after Ballyhale secured their fourth Kilkenny SHC title in-a-row on Sunday.

An All-Star in 2015, Holden also won five Leinster titles and two National League crowns during a glittering career in the black and amber of Kilkenny.
