Clifford hits 1-9 as East Kerry storm to third county title in four years

Newly crowned ‘Footballer of the Year’ David Clifford made it a weekend to remember as he scored 1-9 to inspire East Kerry to a 1-16 to 0-10 victory over Mid Kerry at Austin Stack Park.

The win, which secured East Kerry a third Kerry County SFC title in four years, saw another masterclass from the imperious Clifford whom netted the only goal of the final with 15 minutes to go that all but sealed victory.

Jerry O’Sullivan’s men had built up a 0-9 to 0-5 lead by half-time and James O’Donoghue nearly had the ball in Mid Kerry’s net early in the restart but for a smart save from Sean Coffey.

Fiachra Clifford and Eanna O’Connor point frees to keep Mid Kerry in contention until David Clifford tapped in his goal in the 45th minute.

The Kerry star would add another brace of points cancelled out by O’Connor and Gavan O’Grady, as the margin stood at nine come the final whistle.
