Conor Whelan struck three first-half goals as Galway trounced Westmeath by 6-33 to 0-17 in Mullingar this evening to record their second win in the Leinster senior hurling championship.

Whelan netted all three of his goals in a devastating 10-minute spell to rock the hosts and help send his side towards an unassailable 4-16 to 0-7 half-time lead.

Still looking for their first of the provincial campaign coming into this one, Westmeath didn’t get on the scoreboard until the 21st minute when former Galway player Davy Glennon sailed over a point.

Kevin Cooney had the sliotar in Westmeath’s net three minutes into the resumption and the Tribesmen’s sixth goal would come from substitute Declan McLoughlin with six minutes left in normal time.

All in all, Henry Shefflin’s men had 13 different scores over the 70 minutes as they now look towards their fourth round showdown against Antrim in Salthill next Sunday week.
