The problem with that is you don't know when your county will be knocked out, so it's very hard for club players to plan. At the moment, they have exact dates and can plan summer holidays etc accordingly. I'm not sure why Derry started so late. In Galway we went a bit further in football than them and got to the hurling final and we've had two full rounds of both championships played already. Why are people still obsessed with the All Ireland at the end of August or start of September. It's not going to happen. Presume reason Derry are just starting now is down to the structure that they use - basically a knockout with a back door, such that you might only get two matches. Doesn't take as long to run as Galway or anywhere else that uses groups of four or some other similar group structure. And I also presume that the Derry thing is timed such that their county final is played a fortnight before champions are due out in Ulster Club Championship, and that dates for every other round work back from that.

Without players, coaches, volunteers the GAA would be nowhwere. Those that look down their noses on club football seem a bit out of touch in 2026..Those that blame same 'coverage' of other sports on some of the GAA's woes. There's way more sport on television and the internet that children watch, Still doesn't make them less or more likely to try GAA over other sports. Mam and Dad won't be dragged kicking and screaming to their nearest club nursery by their 5 and 6 year olds because thee were a few more games on the television in August and September, that the GAA magically promoted to a non_GAA audience in the past. Getting players in the door is hard enough, keeping them much harder again. It takes work from clubs, not a few more intercounty live TV games that also hinder the clubs. The clubs are feeders for intercounty. If you keep their schedule well managed you'll keep them happy. One thing I noticed is when you get one child from a family involved the rest might follow and then a few more mates are gonna try it. So be it if a few play other sports, they might never settle on one sport but I don't agree that a sports coverage is so important to get them playing and staying dedicated. Honestly, if they're spending too much time on phone or TV, they could just be as likely to start skipping training cos it's too cold or too wet out that night and they prefer the couch to go out pucking or kicking a ball with their mates. They'll get more life education from teamsports than in a school teaching them how to pass exams.
