Replying To Breffni40: "I specifically offered to have the discussion over eras on whatever terms people liked but of course that was completely ignored as clearly the issue was with me not the discussion I was very reasonably trying to have" On topic so. Modern football, as in all sports, really developed as we know it in the 40s, 50s etc and progressed. Since then, Meath have never been far away from the top table until recently.
If Meath aren't traditional heavyweights, I really don't know who are tbh! To try and claim otherwise is nonsense of the highest order, which hardly deserves a reply!
But you already know this.......

Everything pre 1940, GAA and otherwise might as well not have existed? Just scrub everything from the record books as irrelevant?

Mayo - 2/1 (as high as 4/1) and Kerry 4/9 Mayo who lost to Tyrone and Roscommon, hadn't even been in a quarter final since 2023. Beaten by Kerry in the league by 16 points, hammered by Kerry in last 2 finals against them. Kerry in their 5th final in 8 years. Mayo having failed to win in 12 finals previously.
Has to be the biggest shock of them all - above 1982.

I don't know what the odds were in 1982, but Kerry would have been almost unbackable favourites. Sunday was a massive shock and I expected Kerry to win, no doubt about it. Kerry were deservedly strong favourites, but they were quite lucky to get over the line in the semi-final. They were outplayed for a large chunk of that match. It wasn't a team which was unbeaten for almost 5 years. As an occasion however, I'd agree it's the biggest, given all the context. A brilliant win for Mayo first and foremost, but for the GAA as a whole in my opinion.

I think Kildare were a stiffer price than 4/9 in 1998. I think Galway were available at 3/1 in the week of the game, or maybe that was a 'made for TV' punt, that i recall seeing on the box in some preview or other.

Replying To Viking66: "Wexford beating Armagh in the AIQF in 2008?" Id put Fermanagh ahead of it. Wexford werent half bad then and Armagh were a shell of the 02-06 team. Armagh 04 were seen as almost unbeatable. I aas actually at that game, the Galway Kerry quarter final was the next game.
