Seems mad that there are only 6 teams and 7 matchs left in this years all ireland hurling championship. Be very little PR of hurling with only 7 games . The football will be similar in another 2/3 weeks . The World Cup will never have had such a free run at the Irish sporting public to promote soccer . what the hell is the fuss about? typical hurling folk they are never happy, always whinging about something! there is only 8/10 strong hurling teams, do they want them to play each other 3/4 times a year every year? and lads complaining fellows like chin wont be seen any more this year he can be seen any time the harriers play!!! try going to club games where he looks even better, Stmunnsriver (Wexford) - Posts: 3104 - 02/06/2026 08:21:13 2677161 Link 0 |

Exactly. We have this same whinge every year. I heard someone propose that Tipp, Waterford and Kilkenny should still be in the championship. They had 4 and 5 games each. The first two didn't win one game. There needs to be meaning to the games, otherwise it becomes pointless. Years ago Waterford were often out of the championship after one match. As were Galway in some cases. The current system is as good as it's been in my opinion. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2845 - 02/06/2026 09:04:03 2677171 Link 0 |

The fuss is simply underpinned by the fact the football championship (as distinct from the game itself) is way more interesting this year with novel pairings, big shocks and massive drama in many games. The hurling championship product is now as at it has always been, but it is becoming more overshadowed by football. For neutrals, there are only so many times you can get excited by Limerick-Clare, Cork-Waterford or Galway-Kilkenny in the hurling. The pairings just come up too often. That is no criticism of the game itself, its just an outcome of the closed shop 10-team championship. Eddie the Exile (Monaghan) - Posts: 1344 - 02/06/2026 09:27:38 2677187 Link 0 |

That's exactly it. Cork and Limerick are playing each other for the 4th time this year already between league and championship. There's only so many times you can keep playing matches between the same teams and keep interest in the games. The current setup is as good as we're going to get until more teams become competitive.

The world cup has turned into a farce. Sure how many teams are in it now? The public will only tune in when it gets to the last 8. I don't know any one talking about it

It will be hyped to the high heavens here by RTÉ. If they can get people excited over Leinster playing tams from the Shetland Islands or wherever in meaningless rugby games the media can flog this. GAA's fault for reducing our games to the margins. Will have massive consequences in the future in losing kids. As already partly recognised in the demographics report. Very true. The early rounds look more like a geography lesson than a football tournament.

Cork v Limerick is a 44K sell out Sunday and would fill Croke park if it was on there . Maybe the Munster and Leinster hurling championships could be played over a longer period than jamming matchs on Sunday after Sunday in April , play the provincial finals at the end of June to space out the games a bit . They might hype it, but you'll have the equivalent of two men and a dog watching a huge number of the early games. Great for the countries themselves, but it certainly won't be capturing the imagination until the games get more meaningful.

Yeah. Because kids watching the World Cup are bound to start playing soccer and not play other sports. And GAA clubs putting signs up around town letting parents know about the local GAA club , with contact details and players from the club talking in the local schools, sure that won't make a difference to GAA clubs.

Give us your calendar for the year there, including slots for club championships, league and Fitzgibbon/Sigerson. There are only so many weekends in a year, and even fewer with decent weather. Club championships getting August has been brilliant for the games here in Galway. It's the busiest time of the club season, and they get to play on good pitches in usually decent weather. Pushing the intercounty games out further is grand, but it does come at the expense of club championships. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2845 - 02/06/2026 13:14:58 2677302 Link 0 |

Read the report. Fair play to any club attempting to counter the drift away of course.

The hurling championship is basically played 6-8 weeks earlier in the year than it used to be. M Lyster (Antrim) - Posts: 484 - 02/06/2026 14:23:33 2677336 Link 0 |

I read the report Didn't say that the World Cup was enticing kids away from GAA. From nurseries to Mothers and Others some players wear soccer jersies at training. They won't be fleeing GAA to play soccer. The report never mentions how they should improve efforts to let parents bringing kids to Cúl Camps when their nearest club has training to get them involve when Cúl Camp finishes. Here in Meath club's U15 boys is 3 club amalgamation. LGFA has plenty of players. Problem for some Dublin clubs is they've too many players. Different clubs have different problems but if they sit on their hands and blame the World Cup for not having numbers they should look at their own efforts to get and keep players first.

The possibly ironic thing about all the fervour and ticket sales for the MHC these years is that I would hazard a guess that less 'neutrals' than ever before are watching these games, due to the volume of intercounty activity Jan-Jul in the condensed season.

The only viewing figures I can find( i was curious myself) were for 2024 and there were very healthy things anyway (for the round robin). The final was around 500k and Leinster 450k. Im not sure where to look but 2025 figures dont appear in a simple Google search.
