Football has one of the highest participation rates per capita in the country in Leitrim...there's your culture

Young boys and girls have plenty of role models playing with Leitrim to look up to e.g. Barry McNulty and the Ladies Connacht intermediate champions.

We don't need any psuedo sociological lessons on footballing matters from outsiders."
Well said. This can provide a springboard. Time to push on though and time for excuses is over. Best of luck in the Tailteann Cup. Love to all.

Replying To Gantric:  "I watched the final yesterday with some very shrewd Leitrim football men and we were not really impressed with either team, was exciting but the quality wasn't really there from either team, Galway ave gone backwards since they scrapped over the line to beat us. We then put together a Connacht team from the championship to date and ended up with 8 from Leitrim, 4 from Galway, 2 from Roscommon and 1 from Mayo. Its probably a fair reflection of the state of each team in the province.

Expecting a huge Leitrim crowd in Newry at the weekend, we will surely bring 10-12 thousand at least."
Another gem from Gastric. What time did the Moonshine run out?

I noticed a recent video from leitrim gaa where they got the senior mens team to say a player that they idolised growing up. Not one of them said emlyn mulligan or declan darcy, or even barry mcnulty. It shows that they possibly looked outside the county when growing up to idolise a player. A mindset change is needed here for these youthful players to start idolising leitrim gaa players

Will be interesting to see the line-up for Newry, wouldn't fancy being in Poachers position, how do you keep that much quality happy and give everyone a jersey. Looking forward to a game effort from Down that should make it somewhat of an interesting game. I'm hearing there are 12,000 tickets sold in Leitrim from very reliable football men in Leitrim.

The current crop are too young to remember declan darcy... And as for Mulligan, what's to idolize?

Replying To ohwow:  "The first official gaa clubs here in Leitrim were founded in 1886, I think our footballing history is pretty secure with a statitsitc like that. Roscommon haven't won an all Ireland since they all used asses and carts to get to Croke Park.

We probably have the highest amount of gaa clubs per capita in the country also so our footballing culture is intact in that also.

There's plenty of 7 and 8 year olds in Leitrim who want to be the next Barry McNulty too I can tell you.

Now away with your auld sneering guff and put it on some other counties thread."

And therein in lies one of the problems of Leitrim football: too many small weak clubs playing at a low weak standard. To up the quality and standard, you need to have less clubs overall, but more bigger clubs in general. Amalgamate 2-3 little small junior clubs into one strong contending senior club. That's how you up the standards of Leitrim football.

I think poacher is doing is not showing his hand for the down game. We don't need the likes of tom prior and barry mc nulty against down as I think we will beat them easily enough. The observer has them down as injured by I think it's just mind games from poacher.

No Mcnulty or prior in the squad for the down game tomorrow! Are they both injured ? Too absolutely massive players for us

Indeed I am. Especially the weaker, unsuccessful counties who could benefit from my insight and advice. But no point in telling the Kerry lads or Dubs how to do it.

Awful unfortunate to be missing arguably our two most influential players for this game. I'd be afraid it could be damage limitation tomorrow evening now. And with the Carlow game probably the following week very little time for recovery, they hope Barry may be back later in the competition if were still in it , but won't be for either of these 2 games unfortunately and I think Tom won't be back at all. Best of luck to the team and all we can ask for is their best.

Poacher knows that he can rest players and still get the result.

No both are injured Barry has a broken foot. Not sure what's wrong with Tom, but both not playing. Barry out for around 2 months I hear

That's a balls, tomorrow will be a long hour for the lads I fear. Hopefully they'll have them back for Carlow and get something out of it

Heading off for Newry shortly, expecting a huge Leitrim crowd up there, I expect Down to cause a few problems but in the end our superior quality will get us over the line.
