Hard luck to Wicklow, was hoping you'd win it. And you ran them close. ohwow (Leitrim) - Posts: 110 - 19/04/2026 20:31:55 2667334 Link 0 |

Hard luck jesus it would have being great to see ya dump out the Dubs but nevertheless that should give the county some boost in confidence. francie81 (Louth) - Posts: 260 - 19/04/2026 21:03:08 2667343 Link 0 |

We kicked it away, I think. Couldn't make the game but from reports, 14/16 wides, 8 in the second half. Our goalie, missed 5/6 2 pointer frees, normally a gimme for him. There always seems to have been a monkey on our backs over the decades. When we have a big animal wounded, we can never seem to be able to finish them off. And the Dubs were there yesterday for the taking, whatever slant they try to put on it.

The conditions were set up for Wicklow to beat them. Forget the pats on the head for pushing them close. The chance to beat them might not come again for 40 years

Absolutely. We are sick and tired of moral victories over big scalps. We could write a book on them. Simple truth, that game was ours and we let it slip. No pats on the head deserved , as you say. Once in a generation we get a chance but fluff it every time. The lads may live with that. They more than anyone will know how close they were - and where they made wrong choices. And, it should be clear after yesterday, if our no 1 free taker is having an off day, there has to be a plan B.

I think yesterday proved we are definitely better than Div 4 standard. Albundy19 (Wicklow) - Posts: 137 - 20/04/2026 12:26:02 2667470 Link 0 |

I think the footballers are capable and have the ability to play better than Division 4 standard but the major problem with them is inconsistency. One day they're throwing away a 12 point lead against Longford, a month later they have Dublin on the ropes in a championship game. You just don't know which Wicklow team is going to show up.

We are - sometimes. As the league proved, we are not everyday we go out. Carlow beat us easily, we struggled against Leitrim, Antrim put manners on us and Longford picked our pockets. So, how do we square that with being good enough for Div 3 ?? With Offaly and Kildare in there next year ?

If we were then we wouldn't be in Div 4, utmost credit to all our players who commit in any code, my wish is that they all get the experience of Sunday at a much more frequent basis but the structures are not there and until that's fixed that won't happen.

I'm curious and interested in what you say 'but the structures are not there and until that's fixed that won't happen' - what do you think is wrong within the county?

In footballing terms Wicklow are probably division 3 but there is more to playing at this level than footballing ability. Yes, it is important but conditioning, physicality, decision-making, ability to covert scoring opportunities into scores etc are equally as important as footballing ability. Some of the latter points are what this team is lacking and it is costing them dearly in terms of winning games and promotion. I was very disappointed leaving Sunday's game as I thought it was a great chance for Wicklow to have their day in the sun. Dublin were there for the taken and how many opportunities does a Wicklow team get to beat a team like Dublin. At the same time, I was proud that the players defied so many so-called pundits who don't know what they are talking about had written them off. These group of players have something but I don't know if we'll ever see them achieve what they are capable of and this is a concern I have. The test now is to re produce consistent performances in the Tailteann cup and to finish out matches and get results. If they can produce against a team like Dublin then they should be able to beat teams in the Tailteann cup. Oisin McConville in his interview with Michael Sargent hit the nail on the head when players need to show more composure - this is something some of the current players lack when through on goals.
