Two-Point Winners After The Hooter

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Last weekend's Munster club final gave us that rarest of things, a two-pointer after the 70 minutes are up that takes a team from losing by a point to winning by a point. Anyone know of any other examples of that at any level? Don't think it's happened at intercounty level yet.

Just think of the logic. The hooter signals the end of the game, time is up but you play on and someone can win the game after it's over. This is the greatest nonsense of all time.

Its the way rugby is too. Makes for an exciting passage of play though.

It also happen fairly frequently in American Football - if the ball is already in play when time is up, then the game continues until the ball goes dead. I think it is a good rule. Previously, the final whistle was entirely at the referee's discretion and there was no consistency. Whenever a big game ended with a levelling point from a free deep in injury time, there were always accusations that the ref "played for a draw". Now everyone knows exactly where they stand when the buzzer goes. Also, it makes sense that a free awarded after the buzzer must be allowed to be taken as otherwise the team that is leading when the buzzer sounds would just need to immediately commit a foul to end the game.

Yes Viking but that still does not make it right. The idea was to take the time out of the refs hands. Now it's in the players hands. I can't wait for the day a team is losing by a cricket score but keep kicking it around for half an hour. The other team don't care because a score makes no difference. You can go home and milk the cows. The game is over when time is up and the hooter goes.

Hockey has it right. Even if the shot is taken and the puck goes in the net it has to have crossed the goal line before the hooter. No ambiguity. The game was over before the score occurred.

Revisiting this in light of An Ghaeltacht's recent exploits in the club championship. I think not one but twice they turned a one-point deficit into a one-point winning margin with the last score of the game. But I think they were both from frees, so we're waiting for the first instance of a two-pointer from play to win a game from a losing position with a late two-pointer.

Two point winners after the hooter are more likely to come from frees awarded before the hooter at intercounty level.
Any late late two point winners from play at inter county will have to be kicked before the hooter. If the ball is in flight, those will count.

Thanks, I didn't know that. Were An Ghaeltacht's points after the hooter? If so, I wasn't aware, I never watched either game.

My question includes 2-pointers scored before the hooter, so there might be time for the opposition to respond.

An Ghaeltacht's game had +1 minute of injury time at the end of extra time. They scored the winning two pointer in injury time.

I really don't get how people think the hooter the way it is a good idea it doesn't avoid but only creates more confusion and possible errors see Kerry Roscommon finish

Should have left it as is like rugby game over when ball dead after hooter

Kerry one today was debateable. Roscommon's fault though for letting the man catch it clean and fist it over. The hooter should be gotten rid of altogether, takes excitement and jeopardy out of the game. I guarantee there will be farcical endings to some big games this summer. Completely unnecessary as the club games proved. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

I think I've messed up the title of this thread. The intention was to ask for late winning two-pointers that turned defeat into victory, but somehow the hooter got into my head when I came up with the title. Or doesn't play still continue after the hooter until the ball goes dead? Anyway. I'm looking for what I described above, whether it's after a hooter or not.

Not sure that is correct ? When the clock goes red in Rugby, they play on until the ball goes out of play, no ?

Agree with you, last year was perfect, hooter goes and teams can play on until the ball goes dead. It's a farce at the moment, especially the communication between the ref and the clock minder.

The club championships seemed fine with the usual injury time. Seems like they have unnecessarily over complicated things with the hooter.
