Tá ceart acú - tá na rudaí seo tábhachtach. I wouldn't have copped it growing up but it's a complete mish mash of Irish and béarlachas. The new stand looks right as well as the centre of excellence (open to correction). And when you have a Gaelscoil right beside it, as well as those in the one I gCluainín Uí Ruairc, the students from these schools must be scratching their heads going into ehh Heartland credit union park. Páirc Seán. It's a shame but it's probably similar reasons to the people of Dingle not wanting to be changed back to An Daingean. But if they can get it right in Seán Mac Dermott swimming pool in Dublin , than surely it should be right in Leitrim's own HQ. Hopefully it will come up for discussion again. I think the students will probably spend less than 30 seconds scratching their head about it and carry on into school thinking absolutely no more about it. This smacks of a motion for having a motions sake. Bigger fish to fry as they say.

Every team has that one player that if they are missing the team are significantly weaker. Kerry are not the same team without David Clifford. Dublin are not the same team without Con. Donegal weren't the same team without Michael Murphy when he was in his prime. Barry McNulty is that one player that we cant replace. He is that important for us. That is why he must not be rushed back. 3rdmidfielder (Australia) - Posts: 440 - 22/01/2026 13:14:40 2652497 Link 2 |

Sean Mac Diarmada would be the correct signature. The spelling changes when you put a word before it e.g. Páirc in this case. A cat is cat. My cat becomes Mo chat. It's an Initial mutation which is a feature of Irish. Sloppiness wins the day again. Groundhog day in Leitrim GAA. IronSleeve (Leitrim) - Posts: 70 - 22/01/2026 13:34:46 2652501 Link 2 |

No point in saying otherwise but after seeing the team that is named its hard to see anything other then a Wicklow win. LongBall94 (USA) - Posts: 21 - 23/01/2026 19:36:44 2652798 Link 1 |

Tough task tomorrow in Aughrim , so many lads out injured especially Barry McNulty makes it a very tough ask to get a positive result up there. Especially worried around the middle third where Dean Healy has destroyed us in the past and our full back line worries me too. Not too hopeful but best of luck to the lads tomorrow, would love to be proved wrong. JimmyNail (Leitrim) - Posts: 316 - 24/01/2026 20:59:44 2652967 Link 0 |

Colm McLoughlin should be midfield on that team or at least on the panel.

Seems he was born as John MacDermott alright. But as is the form, Irish people generally have native Irish versions of their own anglicised names that they go by day in, day out in their English-speaking part of Ireland. So even an Irish-loathing James O'Brien from wherever has Séamus Ó Briain as the Irish equivalent, whether he likes it or not. Therefore, when you're naming something John MacDermott Park and calling it using it's Irish name, you'll include Seán Mac Diarmada in the translation. And yep, Irish is saddled with that pesky thing called grammar, one that has an even peskier thing called the genitive case* (just like German, Polish, and other languages), meaning that when you place Seán Mac Diarmada after Páirc, you get Páirc Sheáin Mhic Dhiarmada. And that's that; there's no two ways about it. So I disagree with you about the motion being deservedly defeated for the reason you stated. Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada is just wrong in its language, just the same way that City of Manchester Stadium is grammatically correct in English, and City Manchester Stadium would be wrong. But no-one would stand for City Manchester Stadium if someone tried to call it that, and that's the difference between English and Irish. However, I agree with your second paragraph entirely. It's probably more hassle than it's worth (in officialdom's eyes) to change the name. Pity they couldn't have just got it right in the first place. Shoddy, sloppy, embarrassing (but they don't know it), lazy, shameful; really it is. Apologies for the rant! It started off as something short but then took off. *The tuiseal ginideach. We're well in it here down in Aughrim. Wicklow are going well to be still in it despite early goal chances. It's a pity we can't get a few 2 pointers but early doors yet. Poacher has this team well drilled, I hope it continues into the second half. Square_B (Leitrim) - Posts: 1692 - 25/01/2026 14:48:02 2653066 Link 0 |
