I was just thinking that same thing the other day. Like aside from anything else, I can't help thinking that story isn't getting the headlines relative to the atrocity it was. A poor young child and his grand aunt. Completely innocent. Fair play to the local soccer club for organising the vigil. Where is the activism and outrage among these right wingers about drugs and specifically the cocaine scourge now everywhere in the country (it's a rhetorical question really because a lot of the "patriots" are knee deep in it). The levels of addiction and drug debt intimidation is off the charts and it is not restricted to age or social grouping anymore. Drug gangs have their reach into every village in the country. It is frightening what has happened to some small towns.

Absolutely. Crazy how the issue is not front and centre. It has become so normalised now especially among young people but not restricted to them by any means. Sadly it was only a matter of time before an atrocity like that happened.

Agreed. Sadly it is in every village in the country.

The second biggest scourge is the people buying them, whether its people buying a couple of linesworth for Saturday night or full on spoon heads, each are as equally to blame. If there was no demand there'd be no supply. Bon (Kildare) - Posts: 2623 - 12/12/2025 22:24:54 2648172 Link 2 |

Nail on head. People - Dublin people - took on drug gangs for years. The gangs sold heroin which is much more overtly socially destructive. Main gangs now are smart enough to avoid heroin. As Bon says their customer base is huge. Weed smoking working class - you literally smell it everywhere- to coke in more "respectable" and younger. Anyone who buys any illegal drugs has share in Edenderry. Same as if supermarket chains were burning rivals houses. BarneyGrant (Dublin) - Posts: 3871 - 13/12/2025 07:53:23 2648178 Link 1 |

The smell of weed especially in Dublin City in recent months is unreal. Their is a greater Garda visibility around OConnell street then 10 years ago I regularly see people getting nicked when I'm around there jm25 (Galway) - Posts: 1816 - 13/12/2025 09:32:28 2648184 Link 0 |

How do you achieve no demand? A massive wealth re-distribution programme in Irish society might reduce demand for heroine, but would likely in turn lead to more demand for cocaine. And drink likely causes way more deaths than cannabis, should we ban it too? What about cigarettes? Sweets and sugar? Chips and other fatty foods? The problem is human nature, and more specifically greed. Most things arent too harmful in moderation, but unfortunately moderation isnt something the average human is any good at.
