Not sure Mackessy is good enough yet to start for Kilkenny. But he has potential.

I'm moving to a different county, and I want transfer to a club in that county. However, I'd prefer not to transfer to the club which is closest to the place I'm moving to but rather to one a few miles away. Is this permitted? Wanderinggael (Cavan) - Posts: 1 - 06/12/2024 23:10:31 2582688 Link 0 |
Depends what county you are moving too. Some counties like Dublin don't have defined parish rules, and in areas of Wexford, like Gorey and Wexford town, you could play for a choice of clubs, not neccessarily the nearest to you.

Any thread for players that are trapped in clubs going nowhere? OpenStand (Limerick) - Posts: 725 - 07/12/2024 17:14:02 2582723 Link 2 |
Isn't that the whole point of having different grades? There's a grade for everyone to try and win?

I agree. These players stand out on their teams and now a days get recognized for inter county. Junior and intermediate, colleges are not a handicap to getting recognition. An example is Padraig Fitzgerald playing junior in Killrosanty. In the past Tadgh, Colin Dunford and many others. Able to play star roles at their little rural clubs. This is the beauty of the GAA. The love of Parish first has kept the enthusiasm for our sport going.

Dr Crokes keeper Shane Murphy transferred in from Kilcummin. Austin Stacks got Brendy Sullivan from Valentia who couldnt field team when he left. LimerickForLiam24 (Limerick) - Posts: 158 - 09/12/2024 08:51:15 2582849 Link 1 |
This is the big struggle especially within my own club, Same 8 or 9 faces down every week training away then going getting beat out the gate by a team who's on the rise while your texting lads to pull you out No wonder transfers seem to be getting more common Donegal14 (Donegal) - Posts: 7 - 23/12/2024 15:00:08 2584348 Link 0 |
There is a solution It's called Amalgamation with your neighbour I floated this with our club 25 years ago, they amalgamated at underage but have stubbornly refused to at senior If your parish and the neighbours parish are both junior with one team, why not join together and make an intermediate team with a junior B team? Give all lads a game at a level they can play at and commit to. Corofin is an amalgamated club - you don't hear too many complaints about that amalgamation around those parts tirawleybaron (Mayo) - Posts: 1245 - 03/01/2025 06:49:48 2584399 Link 2 |

Aidan Walsh is 35 and at the end of his career. It's pretty unlikely he's transferring to win medals especially as Ghaeltacht aren't exactly winning all around them unless you think it's 20 years ago.

I don't think anyone has an issue with Aidan Walsh transferring to An Ghaeltacht. It's in a different county, I'm assuming he's living there, and as you said he's at the tail-end of his career having played for Kanturk for years. It's the other story in the article that comes across as unusual. A county player in his prime, leaving his home club for a stronger club only 5 or 6 miles away. He had tried to transfer last year. Apparently he was told he had to be be considered for the Kerry panel. Something that makes no sense as he was going to be playing in the senior championship with East Kerry anyway. Kiligarvin would also be more focused on hurling rather than football.

I'd be surprised if that's the case. There are plenty of players from small junior clubs who have excelled for Kerry. The Cliffords obviously were playing junior when they started with Kerry. Declan O'Sullivan was one of the best players in the country for years, while playing junior for a much of that time. There are many more examples. Like you said, the divisional system means all these players play in the senior championship anyway. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2248 - 07/03/2025 10:55:21 2595186 Link 0 |
