Some interesting scenarios above. Think there needs to be more thought put into the implications of finishing 3rd or 4th. In the club championship here the bottom teams are in danger of relegation out of the senior championship, so that keeps it competitive. Hard to know what possible incentives / punishments could be put in place for finishing 3rd / 4th
Ok Whammo86 so here is a scenario using your proposal:
The 4 provincial winners are Dublin,Kerry,Mayo,Donegal the 4 provincial losers are: Meath,Cork,Roscommon,Monaghan the 4 qualifiers are: Tyrone,Tipperary,Galway,Kildare
Dublin beat Kerry Dublin beat Roscommon Dublin beat Monaghan Kerry beat Cork Kerry beat Tyrone mayo beat Donegal Mayo beat Kildare Mayo beat Galway Donegal beat Meath Donegal beat Tipp Monaghan beat Roscommon Monaghan beat Tipp Tyrone beat Roscommon Tyrone beat Kildare Galway beat Cork Tipp beat Galway Kildare beat Meath Cork v Meath Draw
so the table would look like: Dublin 6 Mayo 6 Kerry 4 Donegal 4 Monaghan 4 Tyrone 4 Galway 2 Tipp 2 Kildare 2 Cork 1 Meath 1 Roscommon 0
IMO that would be 72 games in total as opposed to the current 60 and the super8 70.
I suppose the big talking point would be the draw to see what 3 teams you would get. That would be a fairly complicated draw (would you trust the GAA to get that right ?

Having group stages at the latter end of a Championship is ridiculous. The design of a camel springs to mind. It is better the way it is. Condensing the Championship and doing away with replays is a good idea. If they wanted to give provincial winners a second chance then a tweak of the current system could have easily been done. 4 provincial winners play each other and 2 winners proceed to AI semi. 2 losers play 2 qualifier teams for the remaining 2 semi final slots. There could also be an extra accommodation for the 4 provincial losers to counter some of the current gripes. Instead of after losing and having to play a team on a roll, the 4 provincial losers play each other and then enter the qualifiers. The above system is not perfect but at least the AI Champions will have lost at most 1 game. Having a potential AI Champion with 3 Championship losses on their belt is a bit much.

Seeding the 12 teams into 3 pots of 4 you make 6 draws.
2 Pot A v Pot A ties (could retain Provincial championships rotation system)
2 Pot B v Pot B ties
2 Pot C v Pot C ties
4 Pot A v Pot B ties 4 Pot B v Pot C ties 4 Pot C v Pot A ties
The final round of games being played concurrently could be class with teams moving up and down the standings as the games progress.
It'd be very unlikely that a team losing twice would qualify but it's not impossible leaving even the worst performing teams playing for something on the last day.
I wouldn't guarantee Provincial runners up a last 12 spot, it's my biggest gripe with the current system and it's lack of balance.
