Why has rugby not grown in real terms outside its traditional base in the last 15 years of "unbelievable success". If anything it's going backwards. ---Bain (Donegal) - Posts:434 - 12/03/2017 23:59:48 janesboro (Limerick) - Posts: 1502 - 13/03/2017 11:15:56 1966642 Link 0 |

Yeah but nobody in the gaa tries to make out they are big important games like our rugby folks tell us they aren't challenge games for their equivalent. I didn't even watch the dublin Galway challenge game in America. hill16no1man (Dublin) - Posts: 12665 - 13/03/2017 11:50:04 1966662 Link 0 |
Ah yes, Dublin vs Galway in Fenway Park, truly the ultimate test within the sport.

The friendlies in rugby are quite important because there are so few teams competing at international level in a meaningful way. If there were more teams they'd have bigger competitions and therefore wouldn't have those big friendly games. MesAmis (Dublin) - Posts: 13797 - 13/03/2017 12:40:04 1966689 Link 2 |
Hard to believe it's only a few short months since our glorious test match victory over Canada. When you think of the hammering we gave them, with our 2nd/3rd choice XI, in the ultimate test within the sport, wow, spine-tingling even now. They can call it what they like - it's a challenge game - it's not a league or a cup or even a tournament ergo it's a challenge game.

8 debutants in a game that was absolutely not a challenge/friendly, but a test match, the ultimate test within the sport.

Then we can have something to talk about, not some over hyped autumn money making challenge match in the USA... If there were more teams they'd have bigger competitions and therefore wouldn't have those big friendly games. I don't think a rugby test match is is comparable to a soccer friendly (where players usually swan around taking great care not to get injured). You're right about the number of competitive teams in World Rugby, however. There are just 9 - the Six Nations, not including Italy, & the 4 Rugby Championship teams. This means to keep the whole show on the road (players, coaching staff, TV, media, sponsorship etc.) these teams have to play in one proper tournament, a summer tour & the autumn internationals in what is a perpetual merry-go-round until the RWC comes around again. keeper7 (Longford) - Posts: 4088 - 14/03/2017 01:39:04 1966880 Link 3 |
Keeper Tomsmith here from County Cavan You state that it is a merry go round Well I can tell you that this merry go round is aided and abeited by a very strong Pro Rugby franerinity in the Press. Look at the banner headlines last week even when we were beat of the Field. How many times have you heard it been re-hashed about the Soliders field Victory over the All Blacks. Im sure it will be shown as often as Packies great safe, not to mention that long goodbye that we had from Bryan tomsmith (Cavan) - Posts: 4033 - 14/03/2017 16:14:50 1967006 Link 1 |

When the game was in limerick in 2010 i was there, And you know what when you are from a weaker county getting picked to play railway cup is a great honour too. And to be honest i wish the shinty series was given more kudos i.e. we picked our best players Best of luck to our under 21 footballers v cork tomorrow be there to cheer ye on janesboro (Limerick) - Posts: 1502 - 14/03/2017 23:12:01 1967130 Link 0 |
I think most people would accept that Tests / challenge matches in rugby carry far more significance in rugby than in other sports. But surely they do not carry the same significance as actual full competition internationals? I know the margin is closer, but competitions games are what really matters. Would you accept that it would be a greater achievement to beat NZ, or any other team in a structured competition rather than in a once off challenge? Personally I would place far more significance on the various wins away to England in recent years or the wins against Australia and France in recent world cups than that NZ result himachechy (Donegal) - Posts: 293 - 15/03/2017 12:02:03 1967233 Link 1 |
