Still on the Diarmuid Connolly interview on RTE's 6.01 News and Sport on Tuesday. Compare RTE's treatment of Connolly who was essentially asked by the interviewer to show remorse/regret for his yellow card actions to RTE's questioning of Irish Rugby Union international C.J. Stander who received a red card for almost decapitating an opponent in a 'friendly' match in June. mediaman (Antrim) - Posts: 355 - 20/07/2016 17:29:38 1887167 Link 3 |
I like the great coverage that RTE gives GAA. It is a great boost for local economies and means alot of foreign tourists in Dublin when Antrim and Tyrone etc are successful

The Connolly incident was main taking point across all media not just RTE. Even before the final whistle there were several threads about it on HS. Of course maybe the posters on HS are anti GAA too. Ha ha

Of course Mediaman is right. The same thought struck me. Dont forget this was the launch of the All Ireland series and RTE decided to show the Diarmuid Connolly incident not once or twice but three times. When RTE are launching the next Six Nations will we see the nasty incidents from the Ireland Scotland match? Perhaps a triple dose of the melee following the last Ireland try. Unlikely. Yet this is standard fare for GAA matches. We've already had the melee from a few years ago used to preview the Armagh Cavan match. And it's not as though there were not many positive images to choose from. For instance the Diarmuid O Connor goal from the previous week which I had the pleasure of seeing live. link There were I imagine many similar exhibitions of skill from the other matches to choose from but that would of course not fit with the RTE narrative. mod (Mayo) - Posts: 859 - 20/07/2016 21:49:47 1887292 Link 2 |

Yesterday's RTE 6.01 News and Sport failed to mention today's two Round 4 Qualifiers in football. Is that because they don't really care or is it because Sky Sports is showing both matches? Either way RTE are paid a considerable amount by us to keep us up to date with major news/sports events such as today's two matches. Even to give the times and venues of the matches as they regularly do for other sports would be something. However failing to do so highlights either their unprofessional attitude to, in this case, football or their small mindedness in relation to Sky. Probably both. mediaman (Antrim) - Posts: 355 - 23/07/2016 12:26:48 1888476 Link 3 |
Comparing rugby and gaelic football is similar to comparing stock car racing and formula one. Rugby, league or union, is a collision based attritional sport where one of the main objects of the game is to hurt your opponent. Gaelic football is skill based where the rules prohibit or limit collisions. Though both now have lost a lot of their skills with an emphasis on S&C. Leading to bigger athletes, a more defensive game with an emphasis on not losing rather than skilful flair players who can back up their skills and go and win games. At last after almost three months of negative (or neutral) hurling/football stories on every Monday's RTE 6.01 News and Sport this evening's programme featured a positive story that is Tipperary's stunning QF win over Galway. Let's hope this marks a turning point in the programme's previous 'Monday moan' attitude to our games. mediaman (Antrim) - Posts: 355 - 01/08/2016 21:32:39 1893768 Link 4 |

Interesting to see rte had to apologise for people not been able to access the Connacht final replay on the rte player did to technical problems, off course if the had shown it on tv as the should this would not have been a problem. ros1 (Roscommon) - Posts: 1211 - 02/08/2016 19:03:25 1894229 Link 0 |

Just 3 days out from the biggest sporting weekend of the year so far and not a mention yet of either the football QF's or the hurling SF on the 6.01 News and Sport. No surprise there. mediaman (Antrim) - Posts: 355 - 03/08/2016 20:31:47 1895031 Link 1 |

George Hamilton has a a slot on lyric fm, every Saturday I think, according to my parents who like that kinda thing he's very good at it too! In fact I think my mother would consider him more a classical music dj than sports commentator

George is not the worst commentator indeed. I always expected that after he praised a player that he'd jinx them. Not a big man, in stature, I once stood beside him in Tescos in Ballybrack in the very late 90s. I'm not that big a man myself, in stature, but I was much bigger than George. Seemed a nice enough chap even though we didn't speak. I digress. GreenandRed (Mayo) - Posts: 7923 - 03/08/2016 21:34:42 1895062 Link 1 |
Not once has any of their soccer or Rugby Union commentators/reporters ever been taken away from their proper sports jobs in RTE to fill in for someone else in another area of broadcasting janesboro (Limerick) - Posts: 1502 - 03/08/2016 21:42:40 1895068 Link 0 |
