Does GAA get fair coverage compared to soccer and rugby

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

RTE's Live Coverage for 2016.

Rugby Union - 26 live matches - 15 Six Nations games, 3 U-20 games, 2 AIL/Cup Finals and 6 Autumn Friendies.
Football - 19 live matches - all Inter-County Championship games.
Hurling - 12 live matches - all Inter-County Championship games.

It's fairly obvious which of these three sports RTE is biased in favour of and which sports it is biased against.

You conveniently left out that rte are showing 31 Euro 2016 matches so by your reckoning rte is biased towards soccer.

By your reckoning seeing at rte will not be showing 6 nations from 2018 that you will be of the view at that stage rte is not biased towards rugby

as Roger and ormondbannerman have correctly pointed out there wont be 6 autumn tests show ( i think its the 3 home games) i suspect they wont have rights to all blacks game in chicago.

You also left out two camogie games - sunday game- thank gaa its friday- the geansai- the toughest trade -all star awards , the 2017 championship draw (no rugby awards or draws get shown on rte) - but hey why let the fact get in the way of an anti rugby rant.

In order for rte to show more championship games - when would they be played. There are two matches on tv every sunday, one match on sky every saturday evening sometimes two games on saturdays. SO they either have to show live games at Midday or 6pm on sunday or 3pm saturday or play friday night which wont suit a lot of players and supporters and have an effect on club attendances4

Every major hurling game is going to be shown - all munster championship both leinster semis plus some q finals, and the all ireland series
i dont think they can possibly show any more game .

There will be no more rugby on rte til november - going to be great summer of sports with lots of gaa, euro 2016, and olympics and judging by league finals we are going to see a lot of tony kelly and austin gleeson throughout the summer and i for one cannot wait

soma - ireland have four autumn internationals (why do they call them autumn when they are played in november) can, nzl and aus at home and NZL in chicago- i suspect they will be showing the 3 home games. my suspicion is that they wont have the all blacks game in chicago , not live anyway -ould be wrong though - but it wont be six games -anyway from 2018 on the six nations will not be shown on rte so i await with anticipation as to how the anti rte crew will approach that one

Janesboro there are a lot of dubious 'facts' in that post which is ironic considering you start out by again attacking mediaman. There are 4 games in the All-Ireland football championship this weekend, none of which are being shown live - if you are wondering how they could possibly show more games well then there is one obvious opportunity. I also expect RTE to, quite correctly, cover the rugby 7's at the Olympics where hopefully Ireland will have 2 teams competing, so on top of all the other excitement you highlight this summer there will also be some rugby to keep you entertained before November.

There are 4 games in the All-Ireland football championship this weekend, none of which are being shown live - - correct fair point - more coverage of leinster qualifier group would also be welcome

forgot about the sevens in the olympics - making me look forward more to olympics now

that only covers one or two more games - when would they show more live games on the other weekends, midweek reruns of non live games maybe?

Janesboro as I previously pointed out, RTE show senior international, youth and club rugby matches live so games from across 3 levels of the game. I think I am correct in saying the only GAA they show is senior intercounty. If they were to show more games then they would not necessarily have to come from the senior All-Ireland championship.

100% CORRECT KEEPER - they could have put on on the league sunday show - less talk about the league finals and show some of the qualifer group games

These are questions for RTE. None of us here know their scheduling setup for the rest of 2016 unless we're psychic. Maybe the GAA have a part to play here and their treatment of so-called weaker counties or maybe a live game on Sunday would affect attendances at Fermanagh v Antrim? You can be sure that if it was either team playing Tyrone, Donegal or Monaghan the game would be live on RTE. Maybe RTE figure they'd sell more ads if a 'bigger' team was playing. It's ****** and they like to peddle the 'Intermediate championship' line, McStay would smugly bang on about it unchallenged. Between RTE and the GAA they don't give a damn about weaker counties, they don't give them a return on investment. The best supporters in Ireland support weaker counties through thick and thin, usually thin. Easy to be called great supporters like our own when we're currently winning a bit of silverware, though not the ultimate, and in Croke Park a fair bit.

Apologies for going off topic. Rant over !

I think I am correct in saying the only GAA they show is senior intercounty

highlights of league games, and some club, minor and 21s

Yes but minor games (all ireland semis and finals) are shown on tg4 with excellent monday night highlights
almost all under 21 hurling games are shown plus two football semis and final
4 league games per week are shown on setanta /tg4
club championships

there are plenty on games been shown on free to air platforms does it really matter whether its on tg4 or rte

Janesboro I thought you had accepted some of the the dubious facts already!? No more rugby on RTE until November - incorrect, there will certainly be some rugby 7's from Rio. Every major hurling game is going to be shown - incorrect (qualifiers, current Leinster qualifiers, All-Ireland U-21 final). 2 live games on every Sunday - incorrect, look at this Sunday when neither game is televised. The number of Autumn internationals to be shown is unclear as well, will the Fiji-Barbarians game at Ravenhill be on RTE?

Soma i shall now correct myself

No more rugby on RTE until November should now read - NO MORE 15 A SIDE RUGBY UNTIL NOVEMBER , NO RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIP NO PRO 12 GAMES NO AVIVA PREMIERSHIP NO TOP 14 NO SUPER RUGBY, NO SUMMER TOURS ON RTE

Every major hurling game is going to be shown -SHALL NOW READ EVERY MAJOR HURLING GAME CONSISTING OF EVERY LIKELY CONTENDER FOR THE LIAM MCCARTHY CUP WILL BE SHOWN, ANYONE NOT SHOWN ON RTE WILL BE ON SKY - ALSO TG4 HAVE THE 21S HURLING FINAL

There will be two games on every Sunday - incorrect,- SHOULD NOW READ A MERE 2 GAMES PER WEEK ON ALL SUNDAYS FROM 22 MAY TO SUNDAY 31 JULY- BAR MAY 29 WHEN THERE IS ONLY ONE GAME, THE WEEKEND OF 18/19 JUNE , JULY 2/3, 9/10 HAVE 3 GAMES ON RTE. AS THERE WILL BE ONLY ONE SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP GAME PER WEEK FROM AUGUST ON TO ALL IRELAND SFC FINAL DAY RTE CAN ONLY SHOW ONE GAME, HOWEVER THE MINOR GAMES PRECEDING SAME WILL BE SHOWN

Would assume fiji v barbarians will not be shown as RTE generally do not show games involving these team unless they are playing ireland . Possible they will show munster v NZ maoris in november

You might now tell me wen aprat from this weekend rte will show these extra gaes

Mainly coz there's none to show - it's the Northern Hemisphere off-season.

Are the Ireland 7s team all uncapped for the full team and just contracted to their provinces or what's the story? If they are then they're a lot closer to the Olympic ideal than the golfers? Golf is only in there for the advertising cash. Should be made up of amateur players proud to represent their countries and not pros who fancy a few freebies in Brazil. The BMX is yer only man for the Olympics.

Seriously! are people using the fact that rugby is now in the olympics as some form of proof that there is a bias towards Rugby on RTE.

Its isnt RTE's choice that its in the olympics, people do realise that? RTE will also show archery, marathon running, sailing etc etc.

What's interesting from the figures provided is they suggest RTE have already shown more live rugby games in 2016 than they will live gaelic football or hurling games in the entire year (barring possible replays).

I also find it interesting that rte will show more soccer games than the will live hurling or football - but neither you or the anti rugby brogade mention that -- ill be glued to euro 2016 myself

They have also shown live rugby games at senior international, youth and club level, which is a wider range than they will cover hurling or football also.
They also show club soccer games - which is a wider ranges than they wiol cover hurling or football

Considering the most frequent rebuttal of Mediamans stats is that RTE show way more live GAA than rugby them figures do surprise me

turns out they will be showing more live soccer than rugby or gaa

- it seems disingenuous to lump football and hurling in together as 1 sport for the purposes of comparison with other sports.
Fair point however i hope in the interest of consistency what you request the title of this thread to be changes

The womens team are made up from national side and the mens team are made up of club / academy players, they both ahve to win a qualifying tournament to get there - dont have any problems myself with golfers playing i hope they win and get us some medals

Hope ye win all ireland -have soft spot for mayo like ye we lost two all irelands in 90s and saw our biggest rival win two of them -
