Older people who saw them all seldom had any doubt about Ring. I used to love listening to my Tipp biased Dad and uncles talking about him surviving determined attempts to have him carried off on a stretcher to do things they claimed no one else could. Walking off the pitch be an achievement in itself by the sounds of it! BarneyGrant (Dublin) - Posts: 3118 - 18/08/2024 10:27:38 2565657 Link 0 |
Well,, I wasn't following it,, I was born in 85, but saw my first hurling match at 14,, the leinster hurling final that year, and was hooked. What's confusing you? Galway9801 (Galway) - Posts: 1942 - 18/08/2024 12:13:06 2565669 Link 0 |
I don't think it's fair to say he's carried Wexford. He's an amazing player and his contribution is enormous but in pure hurling terms Damien Reck and Rory o Connor are both better hurlers in my opinion.

That's a fact. My uncle hopper won an all Ireland with Wexford in 1960. The state of his legs genuinely frightened me as a child. My other uncle Albert wasn't much of a hurler but started for the harriers alongside hopper just to mind him. Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 3143 - 18/08/2024 16:21:19 2565686 Link 0 |
First of all 9801 my apologies, that was a terribly worded post on my behalf! I suppose what I meant was, I went to a primary school in Dublin that is GAA mad and is known for producing quite a few Dublin footballers down the years. So when you started in that school, age 4, you were straight out on to the pitches getting football literally kicked into you;-). So I've no real memory of ever not being involved in football. I just assumed it would be similar in a GAA mad dual county like Galway, I just assumed you would be straight in to football and hurling as soon as you started primary. Again apologies for my post it does come across as aggressive, arrogant and condescending! Onion_Sack (Dublin) - Posts: 256 - 18/08/2024 16:47:32 2565690 Link 2 |
I read a book by Raymond Smith, in it there is a quote which states of Hopper McGrath ' no Wexford forward was more feared or respected by the Tipperary backs during the 1960s'.

No worries at all. Apology accepted. Unfortunately there are large swathes of galway city (where I grew up) where interest in hurling is almost non existent,,, I only followed soccer until 1998 when I got behind the galway team who won the all Ireland,, and got into hurling the following year,, Dj Careys sublime performance against offaly in the leinster final had me mesmerised. Every fan of their county could include players that would rank with the greats and not be wrong. Lets keep it that way and where memory serves us we'll take time the admire all the greats from all counties. Canuck (Waterford) - Posts: 2866 - 22/08/2024 14:08:46 2566290 Link 0 |
You've a good u16 team this year. They were runners up in the u15A Arrabawn Cup last year. And are in the semifinal of the u16A Michael Foley Cup this year on Saturday coming. Maybe there are a new generation of great Waterford hurlers on their way?

I recall the first time we played Waterford in the championship. Backdoor in nowlan park in 03. Got to see brown, brick, shanahan mullane and Flynn in full flight. It was a brilliant day with an amazing atmosphere. You looked to be running away with it only Larry Murphy came on and changed the game. Couldn't believe we turned it around. That was a brilliant Waterford team. Some serious battles with Cork in that era that I loved watching. We met again in the same venue in 08 and 14 and again the atmosphere was amazing. There's a day in PUC since that I seem to have blocked From memory Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 3143 - 23/08/2024 08:07:19 2566387 Link 0 |
14 in Nowlan Park was great, but they were kind of between teams that year.

Mullane is one of my favorite hurlers of All Time and is slightly underrated imo. His average score rate from play was incredible and his passion unmatched. Must have been his Clare heritage breaking out in him ; )

Setanta from Dundalk was the best ever. His feats got him a new name and a new job. 19616609 (Louth) - Posts: 1637 - 26/08/2024 00:00:16 2566795 Link 1 |
Lads, for the sake of speeding all this along, the correct answer is Joe Cooney. The_DOC (Galway) - Posts: 735 - 26/08/2024 12:54:57 2566929 Link 0 |
