....and why should he do that? Would you ask all GAA players who sign for soccer and rugby clubs to do the same.

Why is it different? Its only different because you might be half expecting it. The end result is still the same. Well actually its not the same, far more lads come home to play GAA after they finish up with professional AFL than do after they finish playing professional soccer or rugby. 100% Kevin Moran was an exceptional gaelic footballer though.Outside of Dublin probably very few were too unhappy to see him leave Dublin GAA for Man Utd and he even combined both for a brief spell. But he had played League of Ireland soccer before he went to Man Utd, with his commerce degree and Celtic crosses in his pocket. Some man for one man. Apologies for the tangent! A player won't be missing hurling or football training because his AFL team have a championship game. If he goes to professional soccer or rugby it's because he's played either. He'll be just as big as a loss or more to the soccer or rugby team as a hurling or football team. But AFL probably scouted him for his gaelic football skills. They scout in other ball sports too. Conor Nash had potential for Meath and Leinster rugby. But he still had to learn the AFL game when he got there. Some learn it better than others and most of them can't make the cut. Can recall at least 4 County Minors in my county who were lost to a professional soccer career and 2 more to professional rugby careers. Was delighted for them all.

The Roos won their 27th straight game, completing an unbeaten season with Cork's Erika O'Shea, Fermanagh's Blaithín Bogue and Meath star Vikki Wall all claiming silverware in front of a capacity crowd of 12,741 at IKON Park, while Offaly's Amy Gavin Mangan was included on the squad's emergency list. 13k at the Australian showcase shows how little interest there is in the game. I wonder how they can even pay the salaries

Interesting. 48K attended the LGFA final in Croke park. There seems to be a lot more online/social media presence for the AFLW though with a focus on individual players and stats.

The standard in the Australian game is far inferior to the Ladies senior game here, it's no wonder clubs there are so keen to have the Irish girls playing. The fact games over there are shown on tv gives the impression of a high standard but it's not. Claretandblue (Westmeath) - Posts: 2591 - 01/12/2025 16:15:05 2646666 Link 0 |

Its easy for them to do that - They can keep it as AWFL too, no need for international rules

I wonder would the Irish ladies put it up to them? Is there a good spread of positions shared by Irish girls? I know a lot of the fellas end up at full back combo (Galway) - Posts: 33 - 18/02/2026 16:09:22 2657173 Link 0 |

I'd say they'd be very competitive. The depth in the women's game in Australia isn't great. It's still relatively new, and the playing base is quite small. Intercounty LGFA players are coming from a stronger and more established base, and as a result have an advantage currently. Cora Staunton said the talent pool over there was still fairly shallow. Unlike the men's game which has been around for well over a century. Gaelic footballers are competing against a much bigger pool of players in a sport that has been professional for many decades. I'd expect the women's side of it to develop fairly quickly though. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2744 - 18/02/2026 22:58:46 2657230 Link 1 |

New AFL club starting up in 2028 the Tasmanian devils and they won't be limited to the same number of international players as the rest so will likely see some ladies and men picked up from Ireland. Kew (Galway) - Posts: 296 - 26/02/2026 20:41:44 2658799 Link 0 |

How can a player have a contract with an Association? And why should clubs get money because a player chooses to go to Australia? Noone at our club is coaching children expecting a profit. And we all know there's every chance they might not stay playing for the club as adults. Many don't. If they get a hurling or football scholarship from a college should we demand a cut off them? How about if they get a good job in Dublin? Or London? Or Germany? Or wherever? And move to a different club where they end up working. This happened to our club several times over the years. Lads who played for the club until they were young adults transferred to clubs in Dublin and London. Some were Senior intercounty players. We ended up getting relegated to Intermediate. Should we be paid a cut of their wages? Or a signing fee from the clubs they went to? Absolutely we shouldn't. Never heard such nonsense. You see commenters bemoaning the lack of quality of AFL as it stands. A new team will spread it even thinner. While it is proper that Tasmania has an AFL football team it seems there are only about 16 Tasmanian players on the professional books of other AFL clubs currently. That doesn't say a whole pile for the health of the game on that island, which has a population of 600,000. They definitely will be coming calling to these shores. ohwow (Leitrim) - Posts: 61 - 27/02/2026 13:51:42 2658889 Link 1 |
