Looking Forward To 2026

(Oldest Posts First)

I think there needs to be a more positive discussion looking forward to 2026. From the 2025 finalists perspective it is too early.
7 counties emerged from this year's league as All Ireland contenders. There are positive signs for more counties that maybe up to 10 can challenge next year.
Months of club championships to enjoy. 2026 will eventually roll around with plenty to look forward to.

Enjoying the club championships so far myself. Were Tipp one of the 7 teams you had pegged as AI contenders at the end of the League? I don't think 10 counties will be in contention next year, much though I'd like there to be. Hurling or Football.

6 contenders in hurling? Wexford, Dublin and Waterford out to upset the apple cart?
Football had 7 contenders after the league this year. The next 7 or 8 then on their day were capable of causing upsets. I thought Down were going to knockout Galway.

Not sure that. Hard to see Galway being any better than Wexford or Dublin unless they find a few breakout players like Tipp did this year. Darragh McCarthy was only coming on as a late sub for their minor team 3 years ago. Obviously ourselves and Dublin might find some too. As I'm sure every other countys supporters are hoping for as well!
Thinking back to last year and who I was expecting to be competitive this year, or even earlier this year tbh, I'd have to be honest and say I didn't see Tipp or Dublin getting to an AISF, never mind one them winning the Final.
In that way the Football was way more predictable, the 8 QFs contained the 6 teams I was expecting to see there, and there was only 1 really surprising result at that stage, Meath beating Galway. I think by next year most teams will have a few more reliable 2 point kickers than they had this year also.
In terms of advance predictions, complete guesswork I know, Kerry will be the team to beat, with Tyrone, Armagh, Dublin, Galway and Donegal again making the QFs.
In hurling Cork and Limerick would still be the teams to beat, Clare will bounce back and Tipp won't be bad. Waterford, its hard to know. I honestly think Leinster is entirely unpredictable at this stage, whichever county can get and keep their key players fit will be there or thereabouts. Obviously if any of the counties can get 2 or 3 new players to burst on the scene in their early 20s that would be a massive boost for them also.

Would dearly love to see Limerick win the Liam MacCarthy cup again. As a hurling fan, it would be great to see Waterford, Wexford, Dublin etc win a provincial title or better.

In football, tweaking the rules and making the game even more entertaining would be progress. 2025 did a lot for Gaelic football.

IN Hurling, only the munster championship was worth watching. Leinster, League and All ireland series were poor fair.

In Football, Div 1 of the league and the knock out stage of the Sam Magure werent great - the rest was very good.

Both Hurling and football need to revamp their seasons.

Hurling - merge Munster with Leinster and have an 8 team round robing championship for Liam McCarthy with a second level McDonagh Cup of 8 teams.

Change the hurling league to 7 groups of 5.
Would like to see groups like
1A: Cork, Clare, Limerick, Galway, Offaly
1B: Tipp, Waterford, Kilkenny, Wexford, Dublin
2: Antrim, Laois, Carlow, Kildare, Down
3: Westmeath, Kerry, Meath, Derry, London
4: Donegal, Tyrone, Mayo, Wicklow, Roscommon
5: Armagh, Cavan, SLigo, Louth, Fermanagh
6: Lietrim, Longford, Warickshire, Lancashire, Monaghan

top 4 in Di 1 : into league semi finals
bottom 2 in each group enter relegation play off - win first game - qualify for Liam Mc Carth - lose second game - relegated to Div 2
All other divisions top 2 into league final and bottom 2 into relegation play off - 1 up and 1 down.

LIam Mc Carthy to have 8 teams playing 7 group matches - with
Top two Munster teams go to munster final, top 2 in Leinster into Leinster final.
Provincial winners into All ireland semi final,
2 best in Liam who dont qualify for provincials play off against top 2 in McDonagh.- winners play provincial r up for semi final spots

Mc Donagh = 2 from Div 1, 5 from div 2 and 1 from div 3
Christy Ring = 4 from div 3 and 4 from div 4
Lorg Meagher = 2 from div 4 and div 5&6 = 3 groups of 4.

5/6 league matches
7-9 championship matches
In football

The best part of the football season was the group stages - they are now gone.
The league needs to change to 2 groups of 7 and 3 group of 6.

1A: Kerry, Galway, Armagh, Monaghan, Tyrone, Meath,
1B: Mayo, Donegal, Dublin, Roscommon, Derry, Cork,
2: Cavan, Louth, Down, Meath, Kildare, Offaly, Westmeath
3: Clare, Fermanagh, SLigo, Laois, Antrim, Wexford, Limerick
4: Lietrim, Wicklow, Carlow, Tipp, Longford, London, Waterford

Div 1 league semis and final - bottom two in each group into relegation play off.
Div 2 - top 2 into league final - 3rd place guaranteed SAM Maguire football
Div 3 league final - bottom 2 relegated
Div 4 league final - bottom team into tailteann cup qualifier in New York

Provincial Championship round robin (like U20 format)
Connacht: A (Mayo, Galway, Ross) & B (Lietrim, Sligo, London) - top A into final, B Rup & top of B into semi
Munster as per Connacht
Ulster: A (Armagh, Donegal, Tyrone), B (Derry, Monaghan, Cavan) C (Down, Fermanagh, Antrim) - top A v Top C, Rup A v top B in semis
Leinster: A (Dublin, Louth, Meath), B (Kildare, Offaly, Laois. Westmeath), C (Wicklow, Carlow, Longford, Wexford) - top A v top V. Rup A v top B in semis

6 league matches each
4 matches to win Ulster & Leinster, 3/4 to win Connacht & Munster
then the round robin (2-5 matches)

Every county would get 22/23 matches (Hurling and football) as a min
Counties reaching league or all Ireland finals get 25 matches in 30 weeks.

An opening league weekend on St Brigids weekend with Donegal v Dublin, Kerry V Armagh, Galway v Tyrone and Cork V Limerick, Tipp V Kilkenny
hurling 1 week, football the next
Hurling championship starting on May Bank Holiday weekend, with Football league finals on the same weekend
Provincial football on through May and provincial finals in football and hurling in June
knock out championship through July and All Ireland Hurling and football finals on August Bank Holiday weekend.

I wont see it in 2026 but it is where we need to get to.
Also, a smaller boss on senior county hurls is needed - its way to easy to hit long range points over with a half door.

Did you watch any Leinster hurling games? Or indeed any games of hurling at all? Plenty of 1 sided games in Munster this year.
Also did you ever play hurling? If you ever watched a game of hurling I'm sure you would have noticed that keepers use an ordinary sized hurl for puckouts instead of the big bas keepers hurl. Why would that be do you wonder?
And I still think we should get rid of League finals. Or if you insist on keeping them stop referring to the competition as a League. A League has a League table, the winners are the team that finish top of it.

Leinster hurling is nice and all, but there is no edge to it. No different to Leinster football to be fair.

LEinster championship has too many teams and Munster had no relegation.
A joint group of just 8 would keep everybody honest.

A hurling championship that peaks for the Munster final is not doing anyone any favours.

Also, a smaller boss on senior county hurls is needed - its way to easy to hit long range points over with a half door."
A League has a League table, the winners are the team that finish top of it."
What do you deem to be an ordinary sized hurl.

The GAA rule book states that "The bas of a hurley at its widest point shall not be more than 13cm (5.11 inches)".

Your eyesight is decieving you if you think all hurls are below that measurement.

Munster are going to seed the top 2 from the 2025 Allianz Football League on opposite sides of the 2026 Munster football draw. Kerry and Cork are the current top 2. Clare will have to get past one of Kerry or Cork to make the Munster final. Otherwise they'll be off to the Tailteann Cup.
This is especially good news for Division 3 e.g. Down. Higher probability now of the Division 3 winner qualifying for the All Ireland.

Hopefully the football continues to be played in the spirit the new rules intended but not looking forward to this new football format one bit.

Its bad news for everyone bar Cork and Kerry

They now have free reign to go for the league title, knowing they are both in the All Ireland knock outs at their leisure.

They can be planning to peak for two months in July and August no matter what happens in the league.

Cork can be relegated in the league and still only have to beat a div 3 team to enter Sam Maguire and with a back door there, they could lose every league match, win a muster semi, lose to Kerry and then lost in Round 1 of Sam and we would all still have to look at them in Round 2.

Every other team in Div 2 had to play hard to qualify for SAM - not Cork though.

Kerry, the best team in the country have a guaranteed to Round 2 of SAM Maguire, so can drink away all winter and not have to start training again until March to be ready for that day.

THe GAA need to change the format and remove the automatic right of the Munster runner up.

Cork dont even have to try to beat Kerry anymore, there is no carrot only maybe a slightly better draw in Round 1 of Sam.

Its a joke of decision

Or is the Munster SFC a joke of a competition?

Like one poster above I'd prefer if the A.I. Group system was maintained

Clare have been qualifying for Munster finals by beating Division 4 rivals, denying higher ranked Division 3 counties from other provinces a place in the All Ireland, e.g. Down 2024 and Offaly 2025.
If the Munster semi final this year was the Munster final, it arguably would have been the best final. It has to be said.
