Everybody Wrote Us Off!

Is there a more tired, cliched GAA jargon saying?
I'm not in the know enough but I doubt anybody wrote Kerry off in an All-Ireland Quarter Final.
Limerick hurlers have often gone on with this rubbish as well.
Who have been written off? Dublin hurlers v Limerick. Longford or Carlow or whoever v Dublin in first round of Leinster Football Championship.
Its such absolute nonsense and is farcical hearing managers and players peddling this at this stage.

Kerry have won 38 senior All Ireland football titles. They're never to be written off.

It caught my eye as well. "We were written off. People weren't giving us a hope, even down home (in Kerry)" - Sean O'Shea
Were written off? What a load of nonsense. It reeks of siege mentality. And to come out with it after being awarded the Player of the Match.

I think that most people who wrote Kerry off were from within their own county. The late Paudi Oshea made this point over 20 years ago, (how hard kerry supporters were ono their own team).

There are only a handful of times (in recent years) I remember that Kerry were not all Ireland contenders. They always improve regardless of form, once they get to Croke park.

2021 Beaten by winners Tyrone in semis after extra time
2022 Winners, beating Galway by 2 points
2023 Beaten by winners, Dublin in final (narrowly)
2024 Beaten by winners Armagh in semis after extra time

This is their form. They are on fire atm.

They never think anyone will beat them! Don't be even slightly taken it. Mind you, they are right more often than not.

They have developed a bit of a whingy aspect over last while which is unbecoming.

Only team that has been written off really is Meath and them boys are just getting on with things rather than looking for sympathy. Which is why they have been missed. No nonsense from our best neighbours.

Teams use any psychological advantage they can. Philly McMahon said on a recent podcast that he used to nearly make stuff up in his head to fire himself up.
Jim McGuinness is at it with the "everyone is against us" stuff, so what I say?

Anyone who has been part of a team will know managers, players will always find something new to talk about the to G up their team. You can't keep repeating the same stuff all the time.

It's the oldest sports psychological trick in the book. Manager/player perceives some slight against them (real or imagined) and uses it to eke out a few more percentages.

If you've ever watched Michael Jordan's Last Dance on Netlfix, it's probably the best illustration of this.

Strange you mention basketball Lockjaw cos I started watching Celtics City recently. They were nearly the basketball equivalent of Kerry football team they were so dominant in the NBA. Had famous coach Red Auerbach in 50s and 60s who hand a few mindgames including smoking a cigar to wind up opponents! He would deal with players differently depending on what would fire them up.

McGuinness and O Connor have stolen Davy Fitz's coaching manual. Its all or nothing now.
McGeeney used it last year but it just doesn't work when your All Ireland champs (as you cannot be written off then).
Meath and Tyrone will be giving it the "we are written off" card this week.
Meath were giving out about the rules and how they didn't suit them (when the dog on street could see the new game plays to all the skills Meath are traditionally known for)


All teams left in the All Ireland have been written off at some point.

Yes Kerry are one team that hate to be labelled underdogs meanwhile plenty others love the label. Even see some supporters from counties on here are upset whenever they discover their team are favorites for a match.

Its never said by a team who were actually "written off" is it.
If you need been written off, or written on, or written whatever, to motivate you then you need to look indoors as to your motivation for setting foot on a pitch.
