Tomsmith here I feel those play for play , pay for internal Club managers ect shouls look at the etos of the Gaa which was founded on volunteerism. Once that disappears and the pay for play bdigade take over one can wave goodbye to our great Game. It may change like another sport where a fellow would change over and play for the opposition at half time if he got a better offer . I just wonder would this play for pay brigade like to think back on the U 10 U 12 U 14, 16, 18 managers who put so much voluntary work into these Boyous when they were young . It is difficult to know what the answer is. Millions are generated on the backs of the performers. Volunteers have a big input into them starting with parents. However that is true in all sports. There are a lot of money paid to some in the GAA including the managers. It makes me laugh when Tom Ryan with his salary comes out and says the cost of team prep has to stop and does nothing about. Start by passing a rule that all managers have the same rules as players where they can operate with the exception of those helping second division teams. Like or dislike the GPA the performers should not be out of pocket. Already there is pay for play depending on your role. Executives, team managers, background staff and many others on the gravy train that processes a large sum of money. Professionalism may be pragmatic and not the answer but if going to distribute the loot a fairer way of doing it. We are all great at telling people how to give their time and bodies and when confronted say the famous words " no one is forcing them " Without the performers there is nothing to feed our insatiable hunger for the performance. Tomsmith here I heard a high profile player stating that if he was to start again playing he would play another sport where he would get paid .. I took that comment with apinch of salt and it was refreshing to read Colm o Rourkes article in last Sundays independent where he outlined how Gaa players are looked after. I know that most County players generally do well in life after ones Gaa career ends and most end up in handy jobs, I say righty so as most Gaa players come from a situation where all has to be team players tomsmith (Cavan) - Posts: 4006 - 22/02/2025 10:01:48 2592402 Link
