New Rules At Club Games

(Oldest Posts First)

Any early indications of how new rules are working at club level in Meath? How are the referees coping? Are scores up on before or what are peoples thoughts so far based on handful of games played?

Was at a Tailtean cup game last night - my first time seeing the new rules in a club game.
The pitch was marked well and was easy to see.
The pick and go worked well and is really speeding up the game. There were a few frees given when the player picking and going was pulled back.
The 3 up rule wasn't implemented well and to be fair to the referee he doesnt have eyes in the back of his head to monitor this. This will be tricky in important matches especially if theres a linesman from one of the teams

There was one unusual rule introduced where if the ball was kicked backwards from a free or sideline, it was a free to the opposite team. It was questioned with the ref and he said this is what he was told.
Anyone else experience that?

If you take a solo and go backwards, it's a free for the opposition. You can still kick a free and sideline backwards.

Kells v donash in feis cup was an excellent game fast end to end stuff, very high scoring 1st half with a total of 4 -18 between both teams scored. , both teams made numerous changes during the 2nd half disrupted the flow a bit, referee Kieran Orwell was excellent, explaining his decisions when questioned. Positive reaction from the supporters in attendance

Excellent Ref. Talks to the players. Treats them with respect. Finds the balance to be tough. Surprised he hasn't been pushed onto the national stage yet. Could do with more like him.

Was at two games the weekend and have to say refereeing was poor in both. New rules and the confusion around them played the biggest part. One thing that is needed is the halfway line needs to be a different colour as referees are getting confused by the three lines in close proximity.

I think common sense will prevail here. Both sets of players and management will understand that unless the referee has 2 neutral linesmen he has no hope of implementing the 3 on 3.

Only have seen one club game and in fairness the referee was very good.

Teams will be using the cup and league to as preparation for championship so I cant imagine they will be trying to deliberately break the rules. Of course players will loose concentration at times at wander across the line, happened in Dubs Kerry game last night, will take time for the rules to cement properly into players minds.

Really like the tap and go, probably the best rule change with the 3 on 3.

2 pointer another, great way of punishing 12 defending the arc.

In my opinion the rules have improved the game thus far.

Refs didn't attend Meath refs conference on new rules in any great numbers. Which was disappointing.

At a game at weekend. Ref made three errors by his own admission that cost a team 4 points. 2 pointer free that was allowed be brought out and two 13m frees on incorrect calls.

County board will have to appoint lines men to championship games. The handing back the ball has to go as does the need to keep three up if opposition get a black card on a forward. It's no advantage. Free man should be allowed out.

Otherwise it's very very positive. Allows lads to play

Don't need to keep 3 up if a forward gets a black. Equally if a back gets a black one of the three can drop back. In a way, the penalty for a black and even a red has reduced alot.
