A vote on New York entering the hurling championship is due at Congress in Donegal at the end of February. Current proposal sees them coming in to Lory Meagher after round robin stage to create a semi-final against second placed team from round robin stage. Winner plays the final in Croke Park a week later. MrPBoylan (Monaghan) - Posts: 219 - 15/01/2025 13:33:36 2585965 Link 1 |
Wonder if Johnathan Glynn will be on the NY team. I imagine he'd create havoc up forward at that level.

Pointless stuff. Parachute a team straight into the semi final, the resources would be better off being put into the teams that actually play in the lory meagher and help them preserve the game in their counties.

They probably will. Then watch the impact on the 6 teams in the Lory Meagher group who spent those cold/wet weeks playing 5 rounds and either losing that semi-final or getting beat in the final by the newly arrived NY team! Some of those counties are stretched to breaking point in getting enough lads out to play hurling in traditionally football areas. We are appeasing overseas promotion of the game at the expense of counties in greatest need, and are disrespecting the competition by parachuting in a team at the semi-final stage. Either play all the rounds in a competition you are assessed to be suitable for, or don't play at all. LongfordgaaAbú (Longford) - Posts: 586 - 15/01/2025 16:08:10 2585999 Link 2 |
Totally agree with all of that…! There is no way NY should be parachuted into the semi final of any of these competitions….what are these numpties in the GAA playing at..? For a start they are far too strong to even be considered for the Lory Meagher Cup.. All it's doing is putting the 2 fingers up at these smaller counties that have this title to aspire to… The GAA tried to dump some of these counties out of existence altogether a couple of years ago before they had to make an embarrassing climb down when the strong hurling counties were up in arms… So NY could win the L/Meagher, N/Rackard and the Christy Ring Cups over the next 3 years by playing just 6 Championship games…. Are the GAA having a laugh or what..? What exactly do NY do for football or hurling that warrants such favouritism…?

I agree totally with your sentiments but I don't think it's to appease overseas more so the trendier and better connected counties. There are 2 counties in the UK battling away to keep hurling alive that will be badly affected by this if it's allowed to happen.

That's a very good way of putting it, 6 games to win 3 consecutive championships is not right. Fellas will be collecting medals like happy meal toys. Plus they get a 2 week holiday paid for in Ireland in middle of summer! MrPBoylan (Monaghan) - Posts: 219 - 16/01/2025 13:20:32 2586078 Link 0 |
It's a joke

True. Lancashire and Warwickshire are impacted every bit as much as Longford by this. Bottom line is that parachuting anyone into competition at knockout stage is a horrible idea and degrades the competition and those in it.

It gets trips to America for a few officials and board men. Who wouldn't want a weekend in the big apple?

If it's all homegrown players and they must travel to Ireland on their own steam then I'm on board, if they can play who they want lik the footballers can then no chance, sure it's essentially playing a college team of mostly senior standard hurlers against mostly junior B standard hurlers in first tier counties, no disrespect to LM or NR hurlers but it's fact gaelsboy (Leitrim) - Posts: 589 - 16/01/2025 14:18:27 2586088 Link 0 |
From a NY point of view they are looking to develop hurling over there and give there lads games at least. You might remember they have travelled for the Connacht hurling league until the pre season competitions were cancelled. From an Irish point of view it demeans our competitions. Like any new club/county, they just can't be parachuted into the Christy Ring which is probably their level, they must earn promotion like all teams up through the grades which is unfortunate for the LM teams this year. I hope their inclusion in the competitions does not pass. This is not sustainable long term. They'll knock 3 years out of it then pull themselves out of the competitions. Give them a few league games if they want to trial it but don't start with seeding them in a LM semi final BaileCrann (Down) - Posts: 54 - 16/01/2025 14:47:20 2586094 Link 0 |
Agree with the above, if they are American born players then it is just about tolerable, if it is a NY team who have mysteriously acquired lads from Kilkenny, Tipp, Limerick etc then the idea shouldn't be entertained. boxtyburgerbuns (Leitrim) - Posts: 64 - 16/01/2025 15:02:49 2586097 Link 0 |
The team they have is strong based on their last Connacht hurling league win. Turnover etc lads moving back home might affect them which natural. What can't be controlled is what team they actually field when they land in Ireland to play the semi and final. Is there 15 lads from cork going to drive up from cork to play the semi? If you ask for a panel at the start of the year from them, who is to say they don't just name these lads in Ireland as they've already spoken to them? Do you look for proof of residency in America when looking for their panel? Payslips? It's a farce that the suits have not thought out. If our president was half concerned about this

NY involvement in Connacht Hurling League in 2022 and 2023 was effectively in a 3-day blitz format. That format doesn't work for Lory Meagher competition with 6-7 rounds over two months or more, nor is it practical or affordable for counties to be going over to New York to play rounds of that competition, or them coming here. That isn't to demean the efforts going on stateside to play and promote the game, but as with GAA teams in Berlin and Dubai and Hong Kong, it makes no sense to add them to competition at home. It is not practical or sustainable and the option of adding them at knockout stage is an insult and should be heavily resisted. Should the 2:1 ratio of home born players to Irish born also apply to British based teams?

No it shouldn't apply to British based teams.

Its a great idea and hopefully it passes. They have nothing to train for as a collective group over there. Of course do have their own championship. Will give them something to aim for, create a buzz over there and definitely improve the standard there. Gives guts something to play for that are away. countyman2022 (Wexford) - Posts: 753 - 17/01/2025 13:54:01 2586198 Link 1 |
Their standard is ahead of LM it might regress them coming over to hammer teams. Their in house games would be more competitive
