Maybe some will be delighted that the Frisbee Championship is cancelled because the auld Frisbeeing is a rival to the GAA. https://m.independent.ie/weather/thankfully-nobody-got-hurt-connacht-gaa-chief-vows-air-dome-will-be-back-after-facility-destroyed-by-storm-eowyn/a172290480.html GreenandRed (Mayo) - Posts: 7731 - 30/01/2025 12:29:01 2588482 Link 0 |
Understand your sentiments. We feel the same down in the south east. We can't get a bit of asphalt put down to land a plane. Or a catlab to stop people from dying in ambulances on the way to Cork. Cronyism with politicians is the story of our lives. You obviously value and use your dome. The only question is it the correct building for the purpose. It could happen again and you don't want to have spent the money that would have built a solid structure.

With your attitude nothing would ever be rebuilt. I'm aware of structural engineering and what engineers plan for, I studied it in college.

Spot on Canuck. Not on the same scale but I live on a hill. Every year or 2 for 15 years I spent a good few hundred euro on stone and lost earnings for a day each time levelling them. Probably spent over 10k. Or around it. 3 years ago I spent 2.5k getting it concreted. I haven't had to spend anything on it since, and likely won't have to ever again. Spot on about living in the South East also. Viking66 (Wexford) - Posts: 14443 - 30/01/2025 17:22:59 2588539 Link 0 |

Can anyone tell me with clarity if there is any man made, built for purpose structure in the country that would pass a safety check to withstand winds of up to and including 100 mph, if needs be turbine generators, mobile phone masts that vary considerably in height, and high voltage power lines that can reach frightening heights across the mountainous parts of the country, one or two examples will do rightly. supersub15 (Carlow) - Posts: 3091 - 30/01/2025 21:09:40 2588548 Link 2 |
That's a silly statement - it's like saying with your attitude only inflatable structures would be built, talk sense. Cool! Want to give the debate the benefit of your structural engineering training and build a case for the original Dome viability and a rebuild being viable, beyond it got very windy, what can you do? Maybe an earth bank on the western and southern sides?

Yes, I agree with your idea on wind breaks and / or close mesh netting. I would go with the netting first because it would be more instant, the wind breaks might be more laborious and take more time. Both are practical and very possible.

I hope the dome will be rebuilt as I heard yesterday will it not be cheaper to rebuild as did original cost not include the Astro pitch been installed which won't need to be done again. jm25 (Galway) - Posts: 1316 - 31/01/2025 10:03:36 2588588 Link 0 |
I read they plan to have it rebuilt in 6 months. The 4G pitch itself wasn't affected . FoolsGold (Cavan) - Posts: 2844 - 31/01/2025 10:19:27 2588593 Link 0 |
'it's like saying with your attitude only inflatable structures would be built'. Your reading skills ain't great gasun. GreenandRed (Mayo) - Posts: 7731 - 31/01/2025 10:32:34 2588596 Link 0 |
Wouldn't be feasible but an underground pitch and stand would do the job. Like a large version of The Pit in Albuquerque. link GreenandRed (Mayo) - Posts: 7731 - 31/01/2025 10:40:57 2588597 Link 0 |
