6 in a rows aren't for everyone. Also, it's Darragh Ó Sé. Have enough respect for the man that you actually spell his name correctly. Dara O'Shea is an Irish international soccer player, not really in Fenton's league as an inter-county midfielder. MesAmis (Dublin) - Posts: 13792 - 28/11/2024 10:54:48 2581569 Link 3 |

Brian Fenton and Jack O Shea are way ahead of the pack; nobody else comes close. Aibrean (Kerry) - Posts: 322 - 04/12/2024 20:32:42 2582400 Link 0 |
There were a lot less Championship games though when Jack O'Shea played, very hard to compare players from different generations. They were both 2 of the best ever, there's no doubting that imo.

Did Jack O Shea not score a wonder goal v Offaly in the 1981 All Ireland Final….. strange a Kerry person would forget that…?

1981 All Ireland Final one of the great goals ever scored by Jack O Shea

And Fento retired in his prime. There is easily another 4 years in him. I am still hopeful he will return after some time out though..... Fionn (Dublin) - Posts: 4117 - 05/12/2024 09:28:19 2582426 Link 0 |
I hope he changes his mid too, maybe some time away will cause him to have a rethink, the new rules coming into play might tempt him back you never Know.

I often wonder how the likes of Brian - top class athlete as well as footballer - can keep it going at the elite level, which the Dubs undoubtedly are, even as far as their thirties. The commitment is unbelievable and private lives have to take second place. If he decides to stay away, the very best of luck to him. He certainly owes nobody anything.

He did indeed.Jacko scored one of the greayest goals ever scored in An All Ireland final. The ball was worked from one end of the field to the orher without Offaly touching the ball and Jacko hit a screamer past Martin Furlong.Jacko played less than 20 championshop games in croke park as they were no qualifiers then compared to Fenton who woukd have played close to 60 championship games in croke park. Fenton is thw best midfiekder since Jacko imo and while of course im biased I think Jacko was the best midfielder ive seen. Its very hard to judge players and teams from different eras as one has to take the opposition into account too and its hard to judge. However imo Jacko played against better midfielders than Fenton in his era and always shone brighly .Jacko played against Dermot Earley Wille Joe Oadden Declan Barron Plunlett DonaghyTeddy McCarthy and of course played against thevgreat Brian Mullins many a time. For those reasons id have Jacko top of the hill . 7/8 years playing county football is long enough for anyone…. Putting yourself through all that and having no real social life outside the game… When these guys take a break they would find it very hard to recommit to all the disciplined training again..

I think going forward the longevity of GAA inter county players will diminish tbh. The amount of games has increased substantially since the 70's, 80's, 90's etc. Added to that the more professional approach these days. With the new rules, the pace of the game is only going to get faster as well. 31, and at this best, is still young to Retire imo but the demands are so great now. Greater than ever in my opinion. We no longer have, or rarely have, dual inter county players anymore also. As for returning - it will come down to his hunger to come back. I certainly wouldnt rule it out, but the chances are slim. You are correct. I forgot! It was, though, the only championship goal he scored in Croke Park.

Yes, I somehow forgot that 1981 goal. That was the only goal Jack scored in Croke Park; by "Croke Park" I mean in All Ireland Semi Finals and Finals - no other championship games in Croke Park for Kerry in Jack's time. But, here's another odd similarity between Jack and Brian: Brian also scored only 1 goal across All Ireland Semi Finals and Finals. (Please stay calm if it turns out Brian scored 2 goals! I'm only human). Aibrean (Kerry) - Posts: 322 - 05/12/2024 15:05:10 2582500 Link 1 |
But what a goal it was
