That's a completely different point to the one you argued initially. I don't think anyone would dispute that the boxer team has had a poor Olympics overall. The issue people raised was that two of our boxers, O'Rourke and Moorhouse were the victims of some extremely poor judging (to put it kindly). You argued that these were only excuses, without seemingly having seen the fights at all. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2187 - 03/08/2024 12:44:15 2563683 Link 2 |
Stood down again or from before? They were previously stood down a few years ago due to corruption. A disgrace they'd even be used again.

Boxing has carried our Olympic teams for the last 100 years. One medal will be a poor return but the two girls that were shafted were hotly fancied in their respective divisions. Particularly o Rourke. She's the best in that category. Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 3143 - 03/08/2024 15:23:03 2563703 Link 2 |
To be fair they've been exceptionally unlucky in terms of the draws too. Two of the boxers that beat our lads will most likely won gold and fight weaker opponents in semi and or final.

Great performance from rhys in a high quality final. Would we win more medals if the gaa didn't exist? Must be a few gaa players who would compete in other sports? MLR (Carlow) - Posts: 77 - 03/08/2024 17:18:23 2563707 Link 0 |
Agreed that certain stuff went against our boxers. Two of the girls were just robbed, no other way of putting that . I think that the young heavyweight from The Noggin has potential, if he stays amateur. But this is really papering over the cracks, as a previous poster said. 1 medal, no matter what colour, is a poor enough return from 10 boxers This is in no way to take anything from their performances or belittle them. Unlike you, I have no experience of getting the head smacked off me in a ring, I'm just speaking from the memory of watching previous Irish boxers since McCourt. (before someone jumps in here, that one was over the "wireless") I'd imagine, the boxers will know themselves if they produced their best. Boxing did, as you say, carry our hopes for years. Other sports are now leading the way, which reflects the investment going into them in recent years. Best of luck to Katie tonight on her bid to change the colour of hers.

I actually feel sorry for you. You are a very negative person. For years boxing was nearly the only chance Ireland had to get a medal. Thankfully things have changed and as of 6pm this evening we have 3 wonderful gold medals. We had a lot of new boxers this year and hopefully in 4 years time this year will stand to them. We probably would, but I wouldn't swap it for anything. An improvement in facilities, more emphasis on athletic sports in schools and support for local club coaches would go a long way to improving our talent.

I think that nearly goes without saying. We'd be better at soccer too but if you gave me the choice between Olympic gold, a world cup or a Celtic cross I'd take Liam McCarthy to Wexford every single time.

We've had some great ones over the years and with Beijing and London being so good we probably got a bit carried away with ourselves. Billy Walsh was a massive loss which unfortunately was all over politics. It's a fairly young group at the moment. I hope the sports council do what it takes to keep them there, although the results at this Olympics will not help. I adore boxing, but I'm just as proud of every athlete who's contributed to us sitting 13th in the medal table today. A remarkable achievement for a tiny nation with our own national games taking precedence above all else. Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 3143 - 03/08/2024 20:51:07 2563724 Link 0 |
I am around a long time and have met and known a few amateurs boxers - and trainers. I was never privileged to meet Billy. I have met a few though with scary stories about the internal shenanigans and politics within the amateur boxing organisation in this country. I am proud of how all sports have progressed in this little country of ours. As a country , per head of population, we box way above our weight in the sporting world and long may that continue.

I think boxing is an awful sport for a woman to take part in anyway, it's not natural, what's even more unnatural is the men who identify as women boxing the head of women in the boxing ring, it's just a freak show, not a sporting contest. With all these medals, Team Ireland are really spoiling us! I don't want to turn on the TV for anything less than a medal! legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 8284 - 04/08/2024 09:11:37 2563742 Link 0 |

No one is criticising you, people just reacted to your " Everytime a boxer loses its bad judging" comment . It's only been in two of our nine defeats that neutral experts to causal observers felt both Aoife and Daina were convincing winners. Doylerwex is correct in that boxing has carried our team in Olympic history . Up to Paris24 boxing has secured over 50% of medals won (18/35). We haven't dominated boxing by any means, our medals seem to come in clusters. 4 in Melbourne56, 2 in Barcelona92, 2 in Beijing 08, 4 in London12 and 2 in Tokyo 20 ( that's 14 of our 18 boxing medals in five Olympic Games). Freethinker can recall back to the late Jim McCourt winning a bronze in Tokyo64, in the 13 games since to Paris24 boxing has drawn a blank in nine of them. Personally I was hoping for 2-3 medals from this year's boxing team so a tinge of disappointment there for sure. Then again if our little country can win just one of the 13 silver/gold medals available then it's not a bad return. Curlew66 (Roscommon) - Posts: 577 - 04/08/2024 12:00:15 2563753 Link 0 |
has been our best and we are definitely aiming to be higher than that, you have to create double the number of opportunities to medal. So, if you want to get let's say eight medals, you need about 16 opportunities to medal across those sports to really see if it can happen for you. We're very confident that we have those opportunities." - OFI chief Sarah Keane. After Wiffen today [all going to plan at time of writing!!] and Harrington on Tuesday, the opportunities for medals might dry up. The eight medal prospect will most likely rest on the shoulders of Adeleke. Ronnie Delany won Ireland's last gold medal in athletics in 1956! It will be something special for any athlete to win the next."]The 8 out of 16 business just doesn't stack up with characters like Wiffen, Donovan, McCarthy, Harrington. Their olympic strike rate is far higher than 50% on all known form. Pope_Benedict (Galway) - Posts: 3875 - 04/08/2024 12:09:45 2563754 Link 0 |
Yes indeed legend, a repeat of our record time when winning the Europeans would secure 5th place for our 4x400 mixed relay team in yesterday's Olympic final … what a final leg by Bol . Rhasidat Adeleke was 100% correct to sit that event out and conserve her energy for the individual 400m where she will be our best contender for a track medal in the coming week. That is completely false. She is not a man and never was. Very unfair on the athlete. Two irish girl bet here handy before

What sexist nonsense What sports should women be allowed play then. Why is any bit more natural for men but not women to compete in these sports. KillingFields (Limerick) - Posts: 3674 - 04/08/2024 17:15:04 2563798 Link 0 |
