Are you sure about that? I don't remember any AI finals being shown on Channel 4, or any other terrestrial channels in Britain."
Nit picking as always

Thomas Niblock is a welcome change from the commentary on rte even if he does overuse the word "Audacious"

Niblock is refreshingly different , not necessarily better … likewise with Philly.
Enjoyed Marty's (and Duignan) commentary on the hurling final , did a professional job despite being a Banner boy. Match was so good that I enjoyed watching back BBC's coverage later on , opportunity as well to review disputed side lines, 65's, penalties, frees and relive the breathtaking scores again.
BBC did a good job on the hurling final and I expect an even stronger presentation of the football final especially with an Ulster team involved . They will have Athenry 's Sarah Mulkerrins presenting with hopefully Oisin McConville , Mickey Harte and Michael Murphy on the panel.
Daragh Maloney would be my choice of RTE commentators for Gaelic football but he may be occupied by Olympic duties.

Throughout a fair chunk of the 80s Channel 4 showed both AI finals live in Britain. Offaly beating Kerry was certainly one of them. By the time of Ulster's domination of Sam in the early 90s it had stopped, and those of us over here had to seek out establishments with the very early Setanta coverage. This was an experience in itself; advert breaks consisted of pubs in Santa Ponza or - and I am not kidding here -a very young Brendan O'Carroll literally reading out a list of tours dates. No wonder there was a stampede for the bar.

Any roads, C'mon Armagh. Over the bar.

Replying To Brummiejoe:  "Some interesting points raised. First games I remember was 86 football final between Tyrone and Kerry. Started getting interested in games after that. Channel 4 was truly innovative then and showed football finals and hurling finals (I think) for a number of years. There was also a programme on Saturday morning called Tohills tips in which the ex Derry player Anthony Tohill showed various skills of the football game. It was great to watch the hurling game Sunday gone as I knew it was going to be tight and although the result did not go my way I think Clare probably deserved it on the day. Whilst it is brilliant for the elderly Irish over here to be able to watch the game in the comfort of their own home there used to be a number of places in Birmingham where you could go to watch the games in the 90's. Sadly because of demographic trends and the passing on of the old school who made this city there are not so many places to go to now and I miss some of the old faces I used to enjoy a pint with on a Sunday PM. Good luck to Armagh and Galway. Another game that is for me too close to call. I just hope we get a good final."
Growing up with relatives who lived in Birmingham, I do remember my late Uncles bringing my visiting late Father to St Theresa's Club to watch Derry v Kerry in the 1976 AI semi final on what would have been closed circuit TV (and with ticket only admission). I can't say if this went beyond that Championship year or not.

Asking a question is nit-picking?

What's your problem Bon?

Channel 4 definitely showed the Hurling and Football finals in 1990 , , , , , Now here is a question for you what was done in that year that had never been done before and has never been done since and will probably never be done again , , , , , There are two answers to this question ?

Teddy McCarthy won All-Ireland senior hurling and football medals in the same year, for one answer. I must admit I had to check the year. But with the question coming from a Cork man(?), I had a feeling it would be about Cork.

Getting back to Channel 4, were the finals shown live, or as highlights in the evening?

C4 showed live finals.
When it started as new TV station, one of its objectives was to ensure that a more diverse range of topics were reflected in its broadcasting, in contrast to the other publicly funded channels at the BBC.
This may have been the basis for a weekly "magazine" programme call The Irish Angle. This 30 minute show covered lots of different Irish subjects and during the All Ireland series would show highlights of the semi finals from the previous week.
The final themselves though were shown live, I believe taking the RTE coverage.
