Are you picking that team on how they did this year, or how well you know they are capable of playing?

Fair enough All star team. Sam Mulroy was the biggest surprise and he should have got one. Conor Gleeson too ( but that ship sailed with the nominations). anotheralias (Galway) - Posts: 955 - 31/10/2024 15:12:25 2577742 Link 0 |
Sure the real awards are won on the field in view of all. These trophies are decided at a closed meeting of journalists(why don't they have the selection meeting on live TV). Journalists are always calling for transparency except when relating to themselves. Awards like these are a bit of crack, no more than that.

Louth got one All Star in 2010, not two. Paddy Keenan who was a top player for Louth throughout his career and a stand out performer that year. Until Craigs All-Star he'd remained Louths only All Star.

No, they're definitely more than a bit of craic. The lads value these All Stars, they want an All Star, they're **** off if they don't get them, they want to be on the all star trips and gigs - and rightly so. An All Star, when lads look back (and sometimes are well aware of at the time), is one of the highlights of their sporting careers. They're a form of acknowledgement of excellence at the highest level of their sport, irrespective of whether or not they've a Celtic Cross or provincial medal on the mantelpiece alongside it. Well done to all the winners and hard luck to the many strong candidates who missed out on this occasion. There's always next year and a wide open year it is too!

Shaun Patton was very good this year, and would have had him ahead of Blaine Hughes. But I honestly think they got it right with Niall Morgan. As a Donegal man it pains me to give the nod to a Tyrone man, but he was excellent this year in what was a really poor Tyrone team.

Think a bit more controversy when hurling is announce..I'm expecting 6 clare,6 cork,2 kk and 1 limerick..I think tk will probably get one but he isn't in my 15..he had the final but outside of that he wasn't really not existent..I know this is a controversial opinion.for me one midfield position and a half back are only ones up for debate..the football is fair enough ,grimley and Paudie Clifford for me very unlucky but who would be left out?? I wouldn't agree that Tony Kelly was non-existent apart from the final. He got 5 from play in the All-Ireland quarter, scored 3 crucial points from play in the semi to edge Clare over the line against Kilkenny and obviously had a magnificent final. All of those games were straight knockout, so he definitely delivered when needed most.

I didn't say players don't want them. Just pointing out that the celtic crosses or national league medals or whatever are won on the field in full view of all. Maybe someone can enlighten me as to how exactly the All Stars are selected, is it by concensus or vote and if it's a vote what are the rules and indeed who are the selectors this year, does anyone know? How is favouritism guarded against. Does anyone know?

Think he was the joint 2nd highest scorer from play in the entire Senior Championship.

Ah dry your eyes. Louth got one All Star in 2010 and that was Paddy Keenan. He deserved his All Star.

Absolutely deserved. Not to be dragging up history, but I've mentioned it plenty times on here before, that Keenan's block just before the 'goal' we shall not mention, should have gone down in history as a massive moment in Louth and Leinster GAA. It would have been the block which won Louth's first Leinster title in over 50 years. It was an incredible block to prevent what looked like a certain goal. We know what happened after, but I always feel for him that the 'moment' was taken away from him. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2195 - 01/11/2024 10:57:03 2577813 Link 0 |
Paddy Keenan winning an All-Star in 2010 was the single biggest token award in the history of the All-Stars. Had what happened in the Leinster final not happened and Louth lost do you really think he'd have won one? John Galvin from Limerick was the standout midfield of the championship and he ended not winning one.

Paddy Keenan was also nominated in 2007 for an all star so it was not a one off. Paddy Keenan is one of the best players to play for the Wee County. And the answer to your question is yes he would of won an All Star regardless if Louth had lost the Leinster final.

Well Ollie. I hope all is good with you. Did you partake in the Tone's celebrations? Personally I feel that Paddy Keenan is the best player I have ever seen playing for Louth.

I've heard that said before. Some people advocated that John Galvin should have received an All Star that year. I can't agree that he was the standout midfielder that season. Had he been so he'd have got one. John Galvin was a fine footballer and he could consider himself unlucky not to win an All Star over the course of his career. Having said that I saw John Galvin play on a number of occasions. I saw him come up against Paddy Keenan in five league and championship matches. Paddy got the better of him in four of those matches. Paddy was a more complete footballer than John Galvin. To say that awarding the 2010 All Star to Paddy Keenan was " the single biggest token award in the history of the All Stars" is a ridiculous statement.

Great post. I agree entirely with you. That block summed up Paddy Keenan. He was the complete footballer. It's a terrible pity that Martin Sludden got the decision so badly wrong. That block reminded me of Conor Gormley's block on Stephen McDonnell in 2003.
