That's great for a non dual county , sure they've all the time in the world to play it off. Divisional championships and all.

The County Board is made up of representatives from every club. Some are Football only, so hardly likely not to give a damn about it.

Replying To Pikeman96:  "There's the thing - any move to change away from groups of six would lead to complaints about there being less games.

Would be the same if there was ever momentum for going back to 16 per grade in football and hurling. Would surely involve four groups of four, and most likely guarantee only four championship matches per year in each code."
There are only 5 guaranteed games in Football as it is?

Replying To Formertownie:  "I think it's more the latter . But the hurling men would nt exactly be encouraging any football resurgence.
They would rather it rode off into the sunset . That's why I admire the football men as the gave to fight at at every corner . Where hurling is stronger in wexford there are too many other counties are the opposite .I'm sure the hurling men in other counties fight as hard there too .
Hard to see hurling growing elsewhere in lesser counties when there is this growing attitude to concentrate wholelly on one or the other .
Getting to the stage where either codes managers would prefer if lads played other sports instead of the other code . Sad but true"
There are a few different reasons why there is less public support for Football in the County.
Firstly, we haven't even won a Leinster since 1945. Since then we have won 5 AI hurling finals, and reached 7 more.
Secondly, football as a game isn't the same exciting spectacle these days that hurling is.
Thirdly, playing Hurling gives more individual reward to young people as they improve. Theres more of a challenge learning the skills and therefore more reward when mastering them. Many young lads at our club including my own preferred football when very young as they found it easier. Now by far the majority of our u12s prefer hurling. And we would traditionally be viewed as a Football club.
For all that it's some statement you make at the end of that post- I've never met a hurling or football man who would prefer chaps playing soccer or rugby to football or hurling.

They get equal funding. Equal everything really.
Only thing that is not Equal is the income both generate.
Hurling 75% Football 25%.
Is it the County boards fault that there would be more people at an Inter A Hurling game than a Senior Football game. The answer is no..
Our County team need to get their Act together.
Something like 9 out of the last 10 years spent in Division 4 yet they somehow think they are a Division 3 team. If they start getting results then the support will follow.

To win a Kerry Club Championship you play 5 games. To win a Wex Club Championship you play 8.

Replying To WexMurph:  "Big win for the Starlights yesterday, that group could go anyway yet. St James with a one point win yesterday too which should keep them out of relegation. Kilanerin could still end up in relegation hard to believe after last year."
Regardless of what happens today, the last round will be very interesting, every team has a chance of qualifying and the placings are completely up for grabs. Np dead rubbers in this group. Anyone know if the Starlights got some of their players back?

Checked the fixtures this week and decided to take in the Castletown v Kilanerin game on way home from Dublin. Honestly can say it was as poor a game as you could possibly imagine. There was a decent crowd although a good few seemed to come over the ditch from the rugby club!!

I had a couple of friends from Mayo and Leitrim with me and they thought the standard was very bad considering the two teams would be considered top four.

It seems from talking to people that clubs are doing little to no football at underage and that the co Board have highlighted the need for change loads of times. Also appears the football committee aren't active at all and there's a lack of interest from guys to take squads as they are on the club circuit

Just play straight knockout 4 games and your county champs, we will be all Ireland champs then, most teams get 1 game ,if u lucky u might get two

Took in this game also as Arklow just over the road. Poor standard of football. Good crowd but very passive and quiet.

If that is the case how come the standard of hurling is as bad as I ve ever seen it . . Underage top divisions are decent go diwn the divisions it's woeful at times .
Too much emphasis on success at underage

Yes, but you know as well as I do that ten out of twelve teams in each grade get six games. Four get seven games, and two get eight games.

My earlier statement of how moving to four groups of four would "probably" only guarantee each team four games was based on a system of top team straight through to quarter-finals, second and third playing a preliminary quarter-final, and fourth into a relegation semi-final.

If it was instead a case of top two go through to quarter-finals, and third-placed team is finished, then 25% of teams (one in each group) would only get three games.

Whatever way you carve it up, fewer teams per group means less guaranteed games overall. Whether it's just one less, two less, or three less, it's still less.

I went to the double header in belfield Saturday.

The real take away from the first game is that Taghmon are really struggling and it's hard to have much confidence in them heading into next weeks game against Rosslare in what is a relegation semi final, the loser will play Ferns. Ferns have been in similar situations the last few years where they manage to win one game to keep them up, they will have a few weeks to get everyone on board so I wouldn't fancy playing them even though they have had a very poor year. Taghmon getting a man sent off just as time was up certainly wont help their cause next week.

The second game between St James and Bunclody was tight the whole way through. Being a neutral at it I was delighted with the result purely because of how Bunclody set up. They leave one forward up and everyone else is behind the ball. I know alot of teams set up with a fairly defensive approach these days but this is an extreme and I can't imagine it's overly enjoyable to play in that system. St James were probably thinking a win would guarantee them safety from finishing bottom but a draw in Gorey/Sars games has changed all that. If Bunclody manage to Gorey next week it will leave the 3 teams tied and will come down to score difference. Both senior groups have alot to play for heading into the last round

Yes but 1 less might be ideal was the point I was making? 4 groups of 4 would involve top 8 playing quarter finals, 3rd place playing a Senior B semifinal, and bottom 4 playing relegation semifinals. The Clare set up. Every team guaranteed 4 games, half the teams 5 games, and the finalists 6 games. Most clubs/players guaranteed 8 championship games between hurling and football.

Was at the 1st game myself. Hopefully we will have a few important lads back from injury for next weekend, although some of them will likely only make it back for this season if we lose on Friday.

3 other injured lads would have all started also if fit, they have started every game they were fit to start this year. That's on top of the 6 lads away, and one starter who didn't commit this year, and one other who was suspended for the last few games, 7 of whom started games last year, or this year before they went. Big hit for a small club.
It is what it is, the lads who are currently fit and available need to step up now. And hopefully a few of the missing lads will be available on Friday. Hopefully also they put together a complete game, so far they have played well in periods of pretty much every game, but not collectively for a whole hour. If not, they will have another game to try to do it.
