"I saw a few Sligo people at Mass in Gardiner Street this morning and the omens seem to be good for them. The priest was wearing the same colours as the Sligo jersey. 40 yards out on the Hogan Stand side of the field, Ciarán Whelan goes on a rampage, and it's a goal. So much for religion!" shaggykev (Donegal) - Posts: 286 - 25/06/2024 18:16:06 2554832 Link 1 |

It is. A friend gave me it as a Xmas present 20 odd years ago. One of the best autobiographies I ever read.

I liked the bit where he wrote about playing a round of golf with elite hurlers. They would always be very humble when asked about hurling, but the same man would be unashamedly boastful about playing a good shot in golf :)

Met him at a couple of gala dinners in Tyrone, a true gent and not a noise during his speeches. The voice of summer. even if a match was on TV I loved going out to the car seat down and listening to this man on Sundays. RIP. Saynothing (Tyrone) - Posts: 2150 - 26/06/2024 11:25:08 2554920 Link 1 |
Rip Mícheál, there was nothing like listening to Mícheál on a hot Sunday afternoon in July or September while having the tv on in the background. Hopefully a statue will be erected for this Legend soon. hontherossie (Roscommon) - Posts: 107 - 26/06/2024 11:35:56 2554922 Link 0 |

He had the ability to turn a bad game into a good one with his commentary…. I think even the great man would struggle to make anything out of some of the current dross…: ForeverBlue2 (Cavan) - Posts: 3025 - 26/06/2024 13:31:59 2554960 Link 0 |
RIP to Mícheál, we will never see his likes again. GAA royalty and such a dignified man. ExiledInWex (Dublin) - Posts: 1259 - 26/06/2024 17:05:00 2555008 Link 1 |
I remember meeting him in Croke Park in 1995 with people pulling out of him left right and centre but he was finishing his conversation with a nobody like me first. Little things like that you never forget. RIP to a great man. I hope the GAA mark his legacy with something named after him or a statue. It is the least he deserves liosbreac6265 (Longford) - Posts: 254 - 27/06/2024 14:41:45 2555175 Link 2 |
I'd like to see them name Scholarship after him. And maybe let a different broadcasting student help in every GAA match from now on. R.I.P.
