Some of these ridiculous new rules need to be ditched immediately… Games are just gone stop start all the time and it's weighted totally in favour of forwards…. Games have flipped from it being impossible for a forward to play to being impossible for a defender to defend…that can't be right ..The change to the hooter system ( because of a referee error ) is also silly and teams are now just hand passing the ball around for 2/3 minutes at the end to run the clock down… it's woefully boring to watch.. The 50m penalty is also ridiculous and then players can bring the ball back out and attempt one of these silly 2 pointers… It's just not Gaelic football anymore ForeverBlue2 (Cavan) - Posts: 4082 - 02/06/2025 11:07:52 2614244 Link 0 |
There will be no change in rules until the end of the championship. Your going to have to suffer on until the end of July and then another 5 months of club championship - with a bit more next year if the Universities do what they did this year and stick to the previous years rules. tirawleybaron (Mayo) - Posts: 1452 - 03/06/2025 17:08:10 2614642 Link 0 |
A lot of these ridiculous new rules starting to be questioned all over the place… Handing the ball back like a spoiled child at a birthday party is just embarrassing… the inside mark where a forward gets 2 goes at scoring is another example of stupidity… The 2 point scores that's only inflating scores and leading to wild pot shots that would never be taken on in a normal football match… ForeverBlue2 (Cavan) - Posts: 4082 - 08/06/2025 10:49:43 2615705 Link 0 |
The midfield mark has got out of hand now altogether - another bad call in the minors (Mayo v Offaly) at the weekend. tirawleybaron (Mayo) - Posts: 1452 - 09/06/2025 15:40:18 2616159 Link 0 |
I agree. Though as long as the rule is there it's open to difficulty. Perhaps make the midfield mark indirect? brianb (Kildare) - Posts: 472 - 10/06/2025 10:21:50 2616313 Link 0 |
The FRC is seeking a tweak here - just a free from spot of the mark 'foul' (no 50m advance). I think allowing one initial contact might be better, after which the ball carrier must be allowed his 4m. I have a few unrelated rule clarifications: 1) Ball out for a 45: Can the kick be sideways to a teammate who can then drive it over for 2 pts? 2) Free inside the arc: Similar question - can the ball be played backwards to outside the arc, and then driven over for 2 pts? omahant (USA) - Posts: 3304 - 17/06/2025 23:06:56 2618881 Link 0 |
Yes on both counts…. I'd imagine

Changing rules a few hours before knockout games brings the games into disrepute. suckvalleypaddy (Galway) - Posts: 1752 - 18/06/2025 11:01:33 2618946 Link 0 |
If so, it's curious why it doesn't occur - why is that?

That rule is totally stupid… just because a goalkeeper or defender gets a touch to a ball that was kicked from outside the arc it suddenly becomes a 1pt score…. Comical stuff

It operates like that in the AFL.

We are not talking about AFL… but with the amount of rules copied from other sports ( soccer, rugby and Ausssie Rules ) it soon won't be able to be called Gaelic football at all….

I agree that this rule (and a few others like the one you mentioned) needed to be changed but making rule changes in the middle of a competition is ridiculous. They should have waited to introduce all new changes together at the start of next year, following a thorough and thoughtful review and analysis of what worked and didn't work this season. Having said that though, overall, the new rules have still been a resounding success! I was quite sceptical at the beginning but there have been so many hugely entertaining, exciting and unpredictable games this season. Kudos to the FRC.
