It is noticeable how pundits on tv and in the media are constantly coming out with how this team or that team are taking the Taiteann Cup seriously . Only last week on The sunday game both panelists mentioned this. Is it not very condescending? Surely every team is out to win the competition or go as far as possible otherwise what is the point. Nobody would come out and say that they think for example Clare are taking the Sam Maguire Cup seriously so why is this constantly being said in relation the Tailteann Cup? It does lend a sort of negative tone to the competition.

I was at the Antrim London game. Good close contest for the whole game, although Antrim were a bit wasteful up front at times. A late goal from McCann made it safe in the final few minutes. FWIW, I like the Tailteann cup and hope to see Down in the final again.

More than a negative tone on the sunday game tonight where they just showed the highlights of the prelim qtrs - but no followup discussion....

Oh sorry maybe it was too expensive for RTE to fly in Keegan and canavan as well as the 3 hurlers to have a 5/10 min discussion of the games.

Is the Tailteann Cup in danger of becoming irrelevant already? I don't see much interest in it.

The Tailteann Cup a bit like the Sam Maguire competition only gets interesting from now on. Very difficult to talk up games with poor attendance and make it sound good. The attendance at the games for Sam Maguire were equally as poor when you consider the quality of the teams partaking . So we will get about a month of interesting games and that's it until the last week of January when the league starts

Did it need group stages and would a straight knock out competition be better?

I don't think so. Would it then be any better than just the qualifiers for teams.

I was at the Westmeath Galway game last week and a mouthy Galway supporter started slagging us for being a Tailteann team.
The media refer to it as something to avoid during the latter stages of the league and then championship.

The competition is one that allot of counties dont want to be in - its a mid season relegation. People say teams should be greatful for the games but is that the best we can do for inter counties setups that are now near professional in their approach!

No we needed group stages. it is not perfect but prior to this it was teams complaining they play one/two games and they are gone. Sure some teams are disinterested but that was always the way e.g. lads heading to the States for the summer instead of staying round but you cannot stop that, not every team can get to the business end of the competition they play in. But agree in that both competitions are really only getting exciting now with knockout matches and some weaker teams gone already

Its a great competition. Keeps counties at it all year long.

Another very quick to shoot it down but offers nothing as an alternative.

Would you like teams from Div 4 to just get a bye into the knock out stage of the Sam Maguire?

The Tailteann Cup is working out fine.
Don't fix it, if it is not broken.

It is the AI Groups that are not great.
Top 2 go through. Make it plain and simple.

If they really wanted - they could introduce a 3rd/4th competition to run concurrently - bottom 2 in each group play off in 1/4 finals and so on.
At least that way everyone has a good chance of a trophy and a chance to play in a Final in Croke Park, and no extra weeks needed. But not sure there would be the appetite for that though to be honest.

Fermanagh ones crowing already about the weekend saying it's an easy draw for them and they're already in the semi final. Andy should pin their arrogance and disrespect up on the wall.

Great idea. And where might Andy find some examples of this arrogance and disrespect ?

I don't think that would serve any purpose.

My alternative is 3 leagues with relagation and promotion in each.
Top 4 in div 1 go into all ireland semi finals.

Definitely dont think so, Antrim easily the strongest team could have faced(with draw restrictions was 1 in 2 chance would meet) though id say if one in 4 still would have met.

Nobody needs reminding that Antrim beat Fermanagh in last years neutral group game plus Antrim unlucky not to have topped group. After their poor display to get over London id be even more wary of the saffrons, so i assure you that Fermanagh certainly not taking this game for granted and team definitely will need to be firing on all cylinders

The 16 teams in the All-Ireland groups could be ranked 1 to 16. The top 7 and the Tailteann winner can automatically qualify for the next All-Ireland.
The 16 Tailteann teams can be ranked 17 to 32. The previous year's overall championship ranking 1 to 32 can be used for seeding the next year's All-Ireland seeds 3 and 4, and the Tailteann's seeds 1 to 4.
Only the top 2 teams from each Tailteann group should go through to the quarter-finals, the lowest group runner-up could host New York in a preliminary. The Tailteann counties who finish 3rd and 4th could be given the consolation of 2 home games in the next year's Tailteann.
Back on the field of play, hard to look past the group winners. Antrim can't be discounted though. Fermanagh have got the more difficult draw there of all the group winners.

I think the Tailteann Cup is a good competition. It's for weaker counties and it's fulfilling the need . People seem to forget that if the standard of football improved 200% there would still be teams ranked 16 to 33. (I'm including New York and London and excluding Kilkenny) The carrot of winning the Tailteann Cup meaning that you are playing for Sam Maguire is rubbish. You have zero chance of even getting to a semi final. Just look at how Meath (last year's winners) and Westmeath ( previous years winners) are doing . The Tailteann Cup gives all weaker counties an opportunity to play football at a level that they should be able to compete comfortably at.

The Tailteann semi-finals so far seem to have gotten good crowds, as have the teams getting to the final. The Tailteann groups have the same lack of jeopardy being spoken about often enough.
