How many players on those Longford Town teams in 2003 and 2004 were from Longford? Was there even one? And Longford have spent 3 years in the Premier Division since 2007. I've been a big Waterford United fan since the days of Alfie Hale and Shay Brennan, so I know a bit about this topic. CARPS (Carlow) - Posts: 723 - 09/05/2024 09:12:27 2543780 Link 0 |
You don't need lads playing for Longford town to draw interest away from involvement in GAA locally. The point is that there is a LOI team in the town which has an impact. GAA doesn't have the sporting/leisure stage to itself, there are other options for lads to spend their time. If GAA wants hurling to thrive in a county where it has little or no tradition thus far, it needs to invest properly in it, not crib and cry that it hasn't organically somehow happened. Longford's population is 46k, Waterfords is 127k. All of that feeds into the mix too. A core group of dedicated people in three clubs are trying to keep hurling going, but the numbers aren't there, the quantity of people wanting to be involved in GAA is down because of other ways to spend their time, and investment from HQ in promoting hurling is pitiful.
