Mayo who have ran ye closer than anyone over the past 20 years suffered their biggest loss to Dublin (12 points) in QF last year, after a week of a break. Outside of Dublin, Mayo would be seen by most as the next nearest thing to a pro outfit, and had an excellent record with weekly games via the back door system. One slight mitigating factor that may help Galway avoid being routed, is that a few of our key players are just returning from injury and are fresh, but not match hardened.

In 2023 not one of 4 the Preliminary QF winners won their next game. Monaghan went through on Penalties after a draw but the others were well beaten, Cork by 4, Tyrone by 10, and Mayo by 12 points. Mayo suffered a bigger loss at the hands of the dubs than Monaghan did 2 weeks later which points the toll taken by playing big games 3 weeks in a row."
But there's a reason why those teams were in the prelims in the first place, because they weren't good enough to go straight through. I've heard both arguments, a team with a 2-3 week break being "ring rusty" against a team with 2 matches in a row having "momentum" and being "sharp". You'll often hear lads coming off the back of a hard win saying that the next game can't come quick enough. You'll rarely hear them saying that they're looking forward to putting their feet up for a couple of weeks. Mayo lost against Derry for no other reason than they don't have forwards. It had nothing to do with fatigue. Year before last Mayo beat Monaghan on June 4th and hammered Kildare the following week to go though to the QFs. Armagh beat Tyrone on 5th and hammered Donegal the following week to make a QF. Both Mayo and Derry then had two week breaks before the QF and both lost. I think I'd much prefer to carry momentum than to be coming in cold.

I like the new format more than I did at the start, it benefits the provincial winners and then the winners of the group, as it should do. If there could be a rest week after the group finishes, then play the pre-lim games and then the quarter final the following weekend, it still gives the advantage to the group winner and the team coming through gets there second chance and then has to play two weekends in row which is tough.
the 3 weekends in a row is bit too much for player welfare, will only cause injuries.

Replying To BarneyGrant:  "8,000 stupid Dubs made the trip. Perhaps they enjoy watching the game performed well? And in fairness there was quite a bit to like about Cavan who have some good players and play the game positively.

You wouldn't know anything about that as you couldn't be bothered watching them and drag yourself away from the Old Firm for one day."
As I say only a fool pays into a turkey shoot….. I can't account for 8k of them from Dublin… Probably enjoyed getting a rare trip away from Croke park… It definitely wasn't for the football….

I see now why they our game with Louth starting at 1.15 on Sunday, England are playing at 5pm so naturally our great national public service broadcaster want the 'Gah' over and done with earlier.

Mayo were and are the only team who go man to man with Dublin and it's the only way to beat them. Obviously the risk with that is you'll get the odd hammering which we have against them on two or three occasions.

I've been reading all week how Mayo should have bet Dublin, and the result proves Mayo are a top team and blah blah blah..
Dublin did not take that game seriously, no defence cover happy enough to go one on one , try out a few new players, get more minutes into a few older lads....
Mayo went gung ho , full tilt and paid the price ..
Dublin will be back in Croker and will be at full tilt this weekend against the Connacht champions and unbeaten Galway but it will unfortunately for us a step too far .

Two good games on the bounce against good opposition for Dublin.

I think the Mayo game will really stand to them, you couldn't have asked for better going into the 1/4 finals.

Dubs would have had a rest week, then back into it again, they should be close to near peak fitness coming into this game

I'd like to see Mannion start, maybe even give Jack a run

Galway will be coming with confidence as Connacht champions, I think they are good enough to cause Dublin plenty of problems, Dubs will need to be at their best but I have a feeling that there's a big performance coming from Dublin

Dubs +4
