I'm getting really sick of the whole football's finished rubbish, comparing it to hurling / ice hockey / tiddky winks etc. The game is much better than it used to be, a higher quality and a great spectacle for those with an ounce of tactical wit. The kids are playing it in their droves and it's still the no.1 sport of choice on this island. Fact."
So please explain why Jarlath Burns your fellow county man saw the need to set up a high powered review committee to address the major issues with the current game. If you think 29 players crammed inside the 50 yard line is a great spectacle you are easily pleased. Gaelic football is becoming more and more like rugby where everyone chased after the ball Spillane was correct the standard of football this year was dismal.

Don't be talking rubbish… by the amount of posts you have made you must be new to the game or a partner to that posterr from Monaghan who is totally delusional… We had a great game but now it has become unwatchable.. and I'd sooner take the view of someone with only 8 All Ireland medals and only 9 All Star awards than somebody who seems to have fallen in love with the current game since the All Ireland Final….which by the way was an atrocious game….. Even the dogs in the street could see that…

There have been brilliant games over the last 3/4 years. It just takes a couple of high-profile slow-burners to steal the limelight. Maybe a few tweaks here and there from a review committee which is welcome in any era but I enjoy the game overall. I understand how some would prefer the hoof-it-in game with a million scores but that's just not my cup of tea. It's a competitive game all about winning and it will continue to evolve over time. I'm not easily pleased, just interested in the sport and I enjoy a good tactical battle.
I just about watch the hurling final every year, no disrespect to the sport, but I've no dog in the fight or interest in it.
Just on the rugby comment - does it need a review committee? Why do we all love to watch it?

Couldn't care less what others thought of the final, Sam is in Armagh and we're still celebrating, that's what this game is all about, success and winning.
Being a keyboard warrior with hundreds of posts doesn't qualify you as having a higher knowledge. I've always loved the game, even the hoof-it-in and decapitate your opponent football of the 80's & 90's kept me enthused but I love how it has evolved to a highly professional and tactical game. I love how it links our clubs and communities, the passion, the colour and support (as you saw at the final). I thoroughly enjoyed the final (obviously), it was edge of the seat stuff as O'Donoghue & Andrews discussed in their podcast. I get that the set-ups, phases and tactics are way beyond some, including some multi-All Ireland winners but I get it, and enjoy it.
The Dublin team of the last decade were unbelievable, a privilege to witness and to see 4 different winners in the last 4 years is very refreshing.
The game itself is ok (maybe a tweak or 2), I would focus more on reviewing the structure of the championship rather than the game itself.
I also wouldn't hang your hat on the opinions of a guy who last kicked a ball 40 years ago, the game has evolved way beyond his interpretation in my opinion.

A wee tip for you…. Watch a rerun of this year's hurling final and you'll find it hard to sit through a whole football match again….. I know I find it impossible .. it just so slow and boring… If the game was so enjoyable and great why do you think it needs a few tweaks here and there… is that not a total contradiction… I understand your excitement of winning the All Ireland which would always blind a person's real view of the game but anyone with an ounce of knowledge about the game knows it's in dire straits….: Why do you think they have set up a review committee…???

We can agree to disagree. I'm all for change in any walk of life as long as it's for the best. We review and evaluate everything in our work and family lives constantly to make things better, not because they're in dire straits.
I've been arguing this point ever since Clarkson coined the 'puke football' phrase. All Ireland Gold is a very tough watch on a lot of occasions.
On the hurling final, absolutely brilliant spectacle ad that's the nature of that completely different game. Couldn't watch it again as I have zero interest in it. Watched a couple of brilliant badminton games during the olympics but won't be watching any reruns.

A lot of people would certainly watch a rerun of the hurling final but I guarantee you nobody would put themselves through having to watch that football final again…. once was once too often..!

I've watched it about 6 times already! The game is safe, enough of the dooms day stuff. Good luck to Cavan next year.

I see the greatest goal of all time from the hurling final came after a nine step carry!!

Well said, but maybe it is dooms day in Cavan. Weren't they described as the "black death of football" by a pundit not so long ago. Enjoy your re-viewing of the final. Was lucky enough to be at it and I enjoyed it from throw-in to final whistle. That lad in the white coat from Cavan expects to see a hurling game every time he watches a football game. I think he has spent too much time playing hawkeye, looking 30 foot up an upright and into space searching for balls big and small. It would probably turn any of us into a spacer if we kept at it. He needs to take a look at a few games from the 70s and 80s and see how much the game has improved from then, as have the crowds. The game has evolved and will continue to do so, Sunday after Sunday. All the begrudgers and the dooms day believers need to do, is stay at home and give our heads peace and let us enjoy the great game that we have. Who in Armagh gives a damn how many times the ball was played across the field against Galway? The bottom line is Sam rests in the Orchard County and will bring joy to their supporters over the coming months.

The important word there was "won" ….. something Monaghan has never done in an All Ireland Final and they never will… thanks for pointing it out … good lad.

You talk about how the tactical aspect of the game is beyond some,, when you get a chance could you give a detailed account of the tactics employed by both teams in the all Ireland final this year?

Tactical game plans are rarely as convoluted and ingenious as their proponents claim they are, almost any player can get the hang of it, and usually just boil down to who has more patience and discipline (both notable qualities in and of themselves of course).

The most intelligent plays you'll see in football, the stuff that's beyond the ordinary fan or player,, from any era, are the off the cuff moments from the gooches /canavans etc,, or in the hurling we'd have Tony Kellys goal as an example.

You say you have watched it six times already, was that your penance at confessions, you must of confessed a few whoppers.

Yes, I probably could actually but I'm sure you've worked it all out yourself if you've watched it again. Can't blame you if you haven't, I don't watch defeats back again either.

'The most intelligent plays you'll see in football, the stuff that's beyond the ordinary fan or player,, from any era, are the off the cuff moments'

Crazy statement. These are massively important and entertaining and usually come at the end of a play but are not plays in themselves.

I do love to see adventure being shown in a team around the set-ups & plays and in the final Galway showed very little of this, it all really came from Armagh who were probably one of the best teams to watch over the last couple of years, not that we give a damn about that, we're not in the entertainment business.

It's not a crazy statement. Most of those tactical drills and plays you say are beyond many fans can be mastered after repetitive practice. I'm not saying it's easy, it took the donegal team of 2011 an entire winter to get the hang of it, but I just think you're over stating the intricacy of it.

Take for example the gooches performance in the first half of the 2013 semi final against Dublin. Ball goes into him, he analyses his surroundings and calmly takes out about 5 Dublin defenders with a simple pass. Delightful stuff, that the vast majority of todays tactically astute players wouldn't be able to pull off in a million years.

And congrats on your all Ireland win btw,, obviously I was disappointed but our players were brilliant this year, and deserve huge respect for their efforts. No need for the silliness.
You might as well thumb your nose at me and saying "na na na na na".

I didn't realise Armagh GAA was a business… that's good to know.. No matter how many times you watch it back … the match was still dreadful.. This is no reflection on Armagh winning the All Ireland it's just a plain fact about the current state of county football… Unwatchable….!
