League: 28/ Jan to 07/Apr. 8 rounds over 11 weekends. A rest weekend after every two rounds.
Provincial: 21/Apr to 02/Jun. Leinster and Ulster 4 rounds over 7 weekends: 1, 3, 5 and 7. Connacht and Munster 3 rounds on weekends 2, 4 and 6. A rest weekend for all after every round.
All-Ireland: 16/Jun to 25/Aug. 6 rounds over 11 weekends. Preliminary quarter-finals scrapped. Suggesting separate All-Ireland tiered championship. 4th placed teams in relegation semi-finals. A rest weekend for all after every round.

League: 04/Feb to 14/Apr. 8 rounds over 11 weekends. A rest weekend after every two rounds, using next year's format for divisions of 7.
Provincial: 28/Apr to 07/Jul. 6 rounds over 11 weekends. A rest weekend for all after every round.
All-Ireland: 07/Jul to 18/Aug. 4 rounds over 7 weekends. Preliminary quarter-finals on the same weekend as provincial finals.
Lower Tier Hurling: 28/Apr to 23/Jun. 6 rounds over 9 weekends. 1, 2, rest weekend, 3, rest weekend, 4, 5 and rest weekend before finals.
June 22nd/23rd 2024 example for provincial hurling round 5 and lower tier hurling finals. Meagher before Rackard on the Saturday. Ring before McDonagh on the Sunday. If RTÉ are showing Munster Round 5 on the Sunday, the Munster games can throw-in at 2pm so that the McDonagh final can be shown at 4pm. The Ring final being at 2pm."
Tough playing Hurling League SF and F on consecutive weekends, then only 2 weeks to the Provincials. Make reaching the League knockout less desirable than it is already. And then no gap between county club championships and intercounty starting again.

Now you're only giving four months to club championships (September through to December), as opposed to the six you suggested last night (October to March).

You're even arguing against yourself.....

Only got the last 10 minutes of interview, but BBC Ulster talk back show had Jarlath on today's show from 12 to 1. Might be worth listening back on BBC sounds.

All those you mentioned looked to the future.
You left out the best of all - Credit Unions.
Then again they started ( John Hume) in Ireland round 1960, after your time Barney

It was a good listen. He answered everything truthfully and honestly and put up a great defence against those within the Unionist political and media Establishment who berate the GAA at every turn.

Ours started in 1964. I'd have nothing only for them.

Not at all! The provincial club and All-Ireland club championships should run in parallel with the early rounds of the Allianz leagues. Club championships from September to February at least.

You still haven't answered the question about venues with suitable floodlights for the hurling to be played? Assuming there are playable pitches? This year the club championships would still be going now.
And provincial club championships can't be run off in 4 weeks either. Takes 8 minimum to run off the Leinster club championships. If they start in March it means the top club players who make the AI club series won't be able to play in their intercounty championships until July. They will miss most of their county's provincial championship games.

I think you will find that the first credit unions date back much longer than that. and had nothing whatsoever to do with John Hume :-) Even the current league was founded when Hume - a great man no doubt - was still in short pants.

I could easily have managed a touch of uncertainty.

3 to 4 weeks that the restart could fall in would be fine and you could still plan around. There'd probably be at least 6 weeks where you'd know it won't be played and could look to fit holidays into.

I really feel like the system is too rigid ant present and it's hurting club activity."
Completely agree, I have played club championships that have been delayed due to the County team being successful and never once heard a team mate complain, I mean if Antrim got to an all Ireland semi final or final would there be uproar because the club championships were delayed or sheer joy at the county team going well.

A club player whinging that he doesn't know when to take a holiday cos the county team might win something will be the first one still looking for tickets to go to said game. At the end of the day only 4 counties out of 32 reach all Ireland finals.

July finals is ridiculous always has been, at the same time doesn't have to be September either, push it in to August, reduce or remove the early season comps and give the games time to breathe and the promotion it deserves.

Yeah agree.

There was a bad state of affairs a few years ago where club was supposed to be played around inter county but the qualifiers system meant that the county fixtures wouldn't be known until very short notice.

That led to dismay and more structure being needed but honestly a lot of the issue was because of the qualifiers rather than there needing to be a split season.

We either needed no qualifiers or a set club window but we didn't need to do both.

Still think the ideal solution is less intercounty games, spaced further apart, with club games in between. It worked for a hundred odd years until the greed set in. Greed from management for players time, greed from public and the administrators for more games etc etc.

Problem was it WASNT working any more.
Hence the CPA, "Fix the Fixtures" etc leading to the split season and certainty of club fixtures, no Co manager calling off club fixtures, no playing vl County Qtr.Final Friday, Semi Final Monday and Final Satutday as happened in a couple of Counties.
Burns will soon have the CPA back up and running after his throwaway comment the other day!!

The club championships have been played through the autumn months for years. It's not that far removed from the way things were previously. County leagues in the spring and early summer. Ideally club players would have some time away in the summer before the club championships would start in a defined window."
Have you been living under a rock regards the weather for the last 6 months?

Ok but the analysis on why it wasn't working wasn't great.

We'd a championship which was mainly knock out based and where scheduling was uncertain.

If you'd a less knockout based competition with a more clearly defined schedule could it work.

They have international breaks in soccer in spite of the enormous sums of money involved in club football. That the GAA then struggles to do something similar with our games in quite weak.

Jar latch is saying every county would need to have the same competition.

I don't think that's true.

Set 16 weekends free for county club championship.

8 within the intercounty season (Mar to August or April to September or whatever), 8 after the season and get teams playing.

In the 1980s, as a student thumbing a lift home at the weekend, a well-to-do Unionist guy gave me a lift. We had an interesting debate. He was a decent guy, and quite convinced that the GAA was not really a sporting organisation, but was "the IRA at play". He reckoned that training sessions were just a front for weapons training etc. Instead of bleep tests, he was convinced that everyone was disassembling AK47s. He actually believed that, and we had a surreal discussion about his nonsensical beliefs. I asked him to come along unannounced to any of our club's training sessions, and gave him the days and times, but he never showed. Presumably he thought he'd have been shot.

They got these 27 weeks to themselves for inter county and decided to fill it all up, rather than figuring out whether it made sense to do so.
