Best decision RTÉ ever made when giving Brolly his marching orders. Hateful so and so to people who don't pull his way. A lot of people in Tyrone, Kerry and Mayo would love a minute with him. Saynothing (Tyrone) - Posts: 2150 - 08/04/2024 17:16:37 2536676 Link 3 |
Yeah in 2017 final Dublin were able to bring the likes of Kevin McManamon, Diarmuid Connolly, Paul Flynn, Bernard Brogan, and Cormac Costello off the bench. It's amazing what that does for your "mental strength" in the closing minutes. Malonemagic (Laois) - Posts: 803 - 08/04/2024 20:32:48 2536741 Link 0 |
Brolly felt insecure - he's a barrister. He never took his RTE fee - gave it to clubs - cuchulainn35 (Armagh) - Posts: 1685 - 09/04/2024 11:37:12 2536846 Link 0 |

To say that the "SOLE" reason Dublin shaded those games was their greater mental strength, I agree is nonsense but to say it wasn't a factor equally is nonsense. Sure Dublin had an unrivalled bench but the team was also littered with leaders, oozing mental strength. To have so many leaders such as Cluxton, O'Carroll, O'Sullivan, McMahon, Cullen, McAuley, Rock, Alan Brogan, McManamon and more was probably unique and the "mental strength" they brought wasn't absent in the Kerry and Mayo teams but wasn't there through every line of the team as it was with the Dubs. Better bench, physically fitter, mentally stronger and the necessary bit of luck all factors in those victories.

Their ability to take scores when they were needed and slow down opposition's momentum is also important. Many think Mayo are a better team in a chaos game, probably true. But that's because we don't usually control tight games very well like Dublin, Kerry, Derry, Tyrone in the past few years. Not in finals anyway. You make your own luck. Seems to be only the losing team that talks about bad luck, instead of not fouling a player in midfield that gave the ball in for a crucial score, or buying a free instead of holding onto the ball and getting turned over. Cluxton doesn't thank good luck when he lifts the Sam. Plenty have a long list of excuses why we haven't won since '51. Hopefully McStay will improve on what can be improved and not the referee, the wrong keeper on the day or 'Sure weren't Kerry very good that year'!

Yes but how many points should be deducted for home advantage and all the familiarity that it brings, soft referee decisions, population, money, not having to travel far for training. Let's say a conservative 2 points per match. Now how many all irelands did Dublin really win? Give me the mayo team any day over them.

Your preference will come as a major surprise to most. I suspect it might front page of Wexford People. BarneyGrant (Dublin) - Posts: 3118 - 11/04/2024 14:06:34 2537335 Link 0 |
I agree home advantage certainly helped them but Mayo shots themselves in the foot so often neutral supporters just gave up on them….. Mayo were a great team and should have won 2/3 All Ireland titles if it wasn't for their own stupidity…,!!!

You're ignoring the fact that Mayo have also lost finals to Meath, Cork, Tyrone, Kerry and Donegal since they last won one, so maybe any team that play Mayo in a final should be handicapped by a couple of points but I still think they'd find themselves runners-up.

Mayo performed heroically against Dublin in '16 and' 17 in fairness. I think the loss to Tyrone more than anything was the watershed moment for the "neutral" supporter.
