Hard to know what way the final will play out. Dunshaughlin looked very good defensively on Saturday, it will be a different test against Wolfe Tones who are bigger and more physical up front. If Tones can shut down Dunshaughlins 3 main forwards then it is hard to see where scores will come from. Where as if Dunshaughlin shut down Finnegan, Fiachra Ward and Thomas O Reilly - they still have Cian Ward who can score heavy or even Caolan Ward and Martin are good for scores where as Duke, McDonagh and Adam Murphy aren't at that level. Agree with a lot of this but reckon Shane Glynn have an excellent performance at full back for the Tones, brilliant one on one defender. Expect tight final, feel Dunshaughlin will win but don't rule out the Tones, they always max out performance wise. Lost of couple of lads yesterday with injury. I don't think there was a clear enough pull down and it was more of a tackle so yellow card was correct." I thought the rule was you could enter the square once the ball is kicked or passed, don't think you have to wait till the ball arrives any more unless its from a dead ball ( set play ). The footage of the incident circulating from clubber shows its clearly nowhere near a square ball. Pity such a great game was decided on a decision like that. Shouldn't take away from the warrior like performance from Tones though. You need luck to win a championship. Dunshaughlin got the rub of the green aswell again Ratoath with a few decisions at crucial stages. That's sport I suppose and I do believe referees have a thankless job. People need to get over it. Big decisions go for and against you simple as that. Some big decisions went against Dunboyne on the Saturday with a disallowed point for a square ball that when you see it on Clubber clearly wasn't a square ball and also a blatant black card not given to a Dunshaughlin man at a crucial stage in the 2nd half but I haven't seen one post on here moaning about those decisions. If you were predicting the outcome of the final on team form and stats, Dunshaughlin would be winning by at least four points but stats don't take into account youth versus experience. Underdogs Wolfe Tones will take heart that Dunboyne curtailed the high scoring Dunshaughlin and kept them goalless for the first time and that Wolfe Tones themselves scored four goals against Skryne. Dunshaughlin haven't conceded a goal in the last three games. Ratoath went into their QF against Dunshaughlin having scored 8 in their previous game and scored none against Dunshaughlin. Although Wolfe Tones scored 4-11 against Skryne, they were by far the lowest scoring of the 8 teams contesting the Quarter Finals & also of the four contesting the semifinals. Dunshaughlin on the other hand were the 2nd highest of the 8 quarterfinalists. Dunshaughlin have scored an average of 4 points more per game than the tones and it could be argued that Dunshaughlin had tougher opponents. Dunshaughlin (11-28) have scored 21 points more than Wolfe Tones (6-52). Dunshaughlin won all 5 championships games (although 3 were narrow wins) while the tones lost 1 of their five. Although Wolfe Tones have been wonderful at keeping opposing teams to low scores and have Shane Glynn, Dan & Adam O' Neill, Dunshaughlin's supposedly weak defence do have three backs (McCarrick, Rushe, Byrne) who have been consistent all year and have made it very tough for opponents to put scores on the board. Both teams got cleaned out at midfield in the 1st half of their semifinals, which ever team dominates that area will have a significant bearing on the outcome. How much will the experience for Wolfe Tones of contesting the last four semifinals have a bearing on the outcome? Unless the impact of experience over youth & form is massive it is hard to see how Wolfe Tones can win it. Although Dunshaughlin haven't reached the same heights in the championship as they did in their Division 2 final win I think if they click like that again they could win by five or more points. Also think it's been a decent championship this year compared to recent years, 4/5 teams (excluding the finalists) could feel like they could easily be in the final this year and in a final it's all on the day. I can't separate the 2 teams. Looking forward to some interesting match ups. I expect Glynn to pick up Mitchell. Dan O'Neill if fit on Costello, Adam O'Neill on Kinsella, and Niall O'Reilly on Conor duke. Tones well able to hold their own against "the best forwards in de county". In midfield dunsh with gray and O'Connor to get the better of Callaghan and Martin. This is where it gets interesting - who picks up fiachra ward for dunsh? The man was the difference in the semi final and could well be here in the final too. Saran consistently performs on the big occasion and Thomas O'Reilly is one of the best around. in prepartion for what is a bumper weekend of subpar meath champ action i cast my eye on paddypower. looking at the odds for the all ireland club and my jaw hit the floor dunsch are a bumper 100/1 to win the all ireland (1% chance), this is bigger price than some of the club power houses like mohill, rathvilly & st marys ardee. the tones in mr powers eyes have no chance as they aren't even listed. if there was ever a statement of fact about how weak this championship is and has been look no further RobbiesArmy2025 (Meath) - Posts: 33 - 18/10/2024 11:30:43 2575616 Link
Really interesting game on Sunday, and Dunshaughlin are worth favourites - they've come through a tough group and had to get past both Summerhill and Ratoath to get here. So clearly a talented side, and if you Tones let them play football, it could be a long day for the North Meath side. Some brilliant players like Matt Costello, Kinsella, Conor Gray, Conor Duke etc.. They are electric on their day. Wolfe Tones on the other hand just know how to win games, and have been crawling along unspectacularly. Beaten by Dunboyne in the groups, falling over the line against Kells, and a couple of good wins against Skryne and Simonstown have them probably unexpectedly in a final. Great to get over the line but my heart went out to Curraha also, terrible way to be relegated by a penalty shootout. I think a replay next Friday night would have been the correct decision after both teams gave everything for their small clubs, both teams fought like warrior poets. Possibly would have attracted a big crowd also but....... I'm obviously delighted for my beloved Bracks who had a tough championship campaign but we will try go again next season. Congratulations Dunshaughlin. A good day for Meath football. Tones anti football approach will only get you so far and they had as easy as route the final as you will ever get.
