Replying To Moyle:  "We had two players transfer into our club about 10 years ago....to win football medals.

And we had two (different) players transfer out of our club about 5 years ago.....to win hurling medals.

As the saying goes, what goes around comes around.

You should play for the club which represents the parish you live in.

Simple as."
I agree wholeheartedly that you should play for the club of the parish (or other catchment area) in which you live.

Of course, there are some counties that don't have such a rule. It's probably for good reason in a county like Dublin, but it would cause chaos in a county like Wexford.

Anyway, where the rule exists - the problem is not so much with the rule itself. The problem is how it can be easy to skirt around it.

Relatively easy, for example, to get a financial statement or utility bill for any address you want. I can log onto my online banking and change my address there in just a minute or two. Or somebody in the area of the club I want to transfer to could put my name on their electricity account for a couple of months. Now I'd have two forms of "proof" of permanent address to send in to the county transfers committee.

And unless the committee hires private investigators to follow me around and see where I really do sleep at night, then they've really no choice but to take those "proofs" at face value.

Replying To Low2Joe:  "To be fair to the larger clubs I'd have knowledge of in Dublin, they don't push young lads aside. Each team, whether it's the first, second or third team at an age group are all treated the same. Each with management teams who care about them, training etc.

I've seen it more lads be lost due to clubs not having numbers or the drive to structure things properly."
Separate management teams us a good idea

Fair enough - I stand corrected.

Fair play to them. They got what they wanted, life's too short to have regrets.

In a county like Waterford with 48 clubs I don't see why it is necessary to run off the championship in a few weeks. Playing every week with teams missing key players through injury. Neil Montgomery and a few others missing for Abbeyside. Including the up and coming Sean O'Callaghan Waterford underage player. Neil came on but clearly injured. Not saying they would have beaten the gunners buy might have avoided a hammering. Dungarvan had to play with Patrick Curran in the semi.

Happens a lot in Louth. The bigger clubs gain sometimes but the smaller ones gain also. Its never going to change in our county.

There is some talk now about restructuring. Rural clubs amalgamating and restricting club sizes in city areas. Not sure how that would work because the clubs generally grow around some other centre in the community. In the case of Ballgunner Passage a senior club operates in close proximity with cousins and family on both sides. They are dominating minor also and their intermediates would be better than most of the senior teams.

It's well known when Mickey Harte was in charge, he told Tommy Durnin and Conor Early to transfer from their clubs as they were only Junior
Tommy's transfer to Mary's was rejected and he joined Inneskeen in Monaghan instead. Early went to Na Fianna in Dublin

St Mary's (Senior champions with a panel of 45+ players) this year got a new player from neighbour club St Kevin's
This lad was St Kevin's best player in 2022. Put in a transfer to Mary's which was rejected
He never played any football in 2023 and transfered to Mary's this year and has started every Champ game for them

There was talk of Conor Early going to the Blues or the Raghs before he went to Na Fianna.

Surprised the Blues never got him years ago.

They seem to poach a lot of the top talent around Drogheda

Replying To leitrim4sam:  "One of the main ethos behind the gaa is the parish rule is paramount. You play for where you live, where you come from.

The Jack McCarron transfer from Curries, a small junior club in Monaghan struggling for numbers, to Scotstown, a powerhouse in Monaghan football. Going for medals rather than playing and helping the club that took him on as a youngster. Now I don't know the ins and outs of it all. His father was a scotstown man and he may have wanted to play for them too and win senior champs like his father did.

Now I see these talented Offaly twins looking to leave their small junior club Ballyskenach- Killavilla to join Shinrone, lately Offaly senior hurling champions. Surely this is for exposure to a higher standard of hurling and to benefit them. Totally bereft of the gaa parish rule thinking.

What do posters think of this? Players leaving their home club, the club that accepted them, their friends, neighbours and community in search of winning titles with another club?

Any other examples in your county?

Best example I have against it is Richie Hogan, hurled with his local club Danesfort. Won an All Ireland club junior champ with danesfort before he won inter county senior champ with Kilkenny. Could have hurled for anyone.

Is this rife in the GAA??"
Just seeing this now. I'm not being smart but the irony of picking Richie Hogan is brilliant. Richie and his family actually went to the county board to have the parish boundary moved 100m further. They then had to go to the Bishop and eventually moved it so he didn't have to play with Bennettsbridge.

I'm not Dundalk Gaels man

Was an odd one alright, serious trouble in D'hill over it. They won't be fielding a team next season I'm led to believe and they have literally 0 underage players
