Páirc Uí Chaoimh

Replying To Fitzy01:  "That may well be but they now have one of the best GAA grounds in the country for their supporters and it is a stadium to be proud of. The naming is a tad unfortunate though and the location is a nightmare to get in an out of. Many neutrals will still opt for Thurles or Limerick where there is inferior (in Limericks case at least) but similar sized venues as they will spend far less time in their cars or walking."
PUC was nothing but a pet project for the former County Board Secretary. It's basically a white elephant & continues to be loss making. It's nothing to be proud lets be honest. It should be a source of embarrassment to all involved in Cork GAA.

Naming rights for Pairc Ui Chaoimh are bad.

Ed Sheeran and Elton John gigs in Pairc Ui Chaoimh are bad.

The Pairc Ui Chaoimh debt is bad.

What to do with Pairc Ui Chaoimh?

The Limerick Pitch was another Folly. Far too big for the level of support for Gaelic Games in the county

Wexford Park has a sponsorship name attached this long time. Nobody uses it

Come to think of it....

FBD semple stadium.... Innovate, then Chadwick's Wexford Park.... PWC Nowlan Park....

Nobody cares or uses them.

I don't see what the big deal is

They moved the Aviva Stadium pitch a good bit eastwards so not very much of the old pitch is a part of the new one. In that sense a name change was actually suitable.
It is different with Croke Park and Ui Chaoimh because the pitch didn't move that much. Casement park pitch won't change either.

I'd say from SuperValu's point of view, that's exactly what the big deal is.

They know that if it were called SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh, people would still just say Páirc Uí Chaoimh, the way we say Wexford Park instead of Chadwicks Wexford Park, or Nowlan Park instead of UPMC Nowlan Park.

Incidentally - and nothing personal here! - the fact that you got the name of UMPC Nowlan Park wrong just goes to prove how the sponsor doesn't get full recognition when the full original name of the ground is kept as well.

Despite what somebody said in an earlier post, I think most people now call the rugby/soccer stadium in Dublin the Aviva Stadium, rather than Lansdowne Road. But if the naming rights deal had been just to call it "Aviva Lansdowne Road", most would probably still just call it Lansdowne Road. And there's the difference it makes to a sponsor like Aviva or SuperValu.

I'm still not saying it's right, though!

Hahaha I thought of it about 2 minutes after I posted but you're right.

My auld lad would be heavily involved in soccer. He and the company he keeps still refer to the Aviva as Lansdowne road.

My point is the purest will refer to it as what they think it should be called regardless.

Another example is the amount of people who say they're going to tayto Park even though that's no longer the name.

The sponsorship thing is an odd one. SuperValu probably makes sense given their demographic are probably into gaa. similar to Chadwick's I suppose, but innovate was always an odd one for me. The pensioner in the flat cap doesn't know what it means so I'd be interested to know how much they got out of it

Avantcard pairc Sean mac diarmada in Carrick is another prime example. If companies r willing to put up big money to sponsor a ground fair play 2 them but GAA will always be traditional

Gaels of Cork succeeded in temporarily halting this assault on our traditions and history.

Seems like the tide may be turning on all fronts,

Galway GAA said no to Dexcom who wanted to rename Pearse Stadium and any reference to Padraig Pearse. Connacht Rugby immediately said yes to Dexcom. They'd sell their mother ;-)

Hahahaha
Or they knew it was too good to turn down especially with them finding their redevelopment at the moment
Galway gaa better not complain about funding for anything in next few years as this was someone very willing to give them thousands every year....

Too much emphasis on infrastructure and legacy projects these days. Clare gave Limerick home advantage in last year's Munster Final rather than drag everyone down there for it. Pure white elephant.

Me and you will just end up paying more out of our own pockets Barney. The GAA could have spent the many millions they are going to end up giving Cork GAA on promoting hurling in some of the many areas where it isn't played for example. You know, doing what the organisation was set up to do in the 1st place. It was all about preserving and promoting the games back in the 1880s, and that's been lost along the way.

Yes with us older lads Mesamis but the young folk forget and the names will fade in time.I asked my daughter about a concert in the Point depot and she did nt know what I was on about it.Id like to see the name remain but go with Supervalu Pairc Ui Caoimh but obviously Supervalu might not want that.

So you think it would be okay for Galway GAA to change the name of a stadium named in honour of Padraig Pearse to the name of a sponsor?

I wouldn't be darkening the gate of StayCity Park in Donnycarney.
