I think you're underestimating Deano, I can't say I remember him missing a clutch score in a big game from play or otherwise something I can't say for other marksmen like Cillian from Mayo or even the great David from Kerry, when the chips were down Deano stood up, that's the test. Kicking over sidewinder "score of the year" points from the wing in the qualifiers etc. Let them at it but Dean Rock kicked "winners".

When very good/great players retire, they should be praised for their commitments to club or county, their scoring, goal saving, or defensive records, their medals haul if lucky to succeed that way. Of course there will be greater players past or present. Anyway, I think for me the GPS point v Mayo is my highlight for Deano. To keep composure when an opposing player throws something in front of you, as you about about to take a match winning kick. Nerves of steel Dean. Great to see him come off the bench last year and close the game out with the final point for the Dubs v Kerry in the final also. What a way to end an Inter County Career.... In fairness he played 99% of his Championship games on the one pitch which had to be to his advantage…. I wonder how many "winners" he'd kick up in Donegal or Omagh in the white heat of championship football…..

The school of sums in Cavan is not great, as he has played approximately 60 championship matches in total, 99% in Croker would mean a maximum of 1 championship game in Croke Park and that is B.S. More like 25% of his championship matches outside Croker and that would be higher if the Dubs didn't qualify for the knock-out stages every year he played. sligo joe (Dublin) - Posts: 802 - 19/01/2024 11:11:48 2520932 Link 1 |
This thread has gone silly like so many do. Dublin fans caring what posters from other counties think, including posters who are just stirring the pot is hilarious. If you start a thread like this debate is expected. Some great players from my own county have been analysed on here, some unfairly, it's pointless debating these things on here. His free at the death against Mayo was brilliant, nerves of steel for sure but you don't need to over dramatise it. Rock didn't see the GPS as he was executing the kick. So not sure why you added that. TheFlaker (Mayo) - Posts: 8172 - 19/01/2024 11:45:58 2520936 Link 2 |
I'd say the fact that he didn't see the carry-on by Lee even though it was clearly in his line of vision is testimony to his ability to 100% focus on the kick, maybe that's why he was so consistent.

Yep but that isn't the point i was making. People sometimes add the extra bit for dramatic effect. He literally had no idea Keegan did anything.

You reckon he has played 15 of his 60 championship games outside Croker…? I wouldn't think so.. For 7/8 years in a row every one of their games was at headquarters… my 99% was a throw away comment not to be taken completely seriously… Anyway games away to Longford or Carlow in Leinster would not be regarded as too taxing
