Replying To sligo joe: "Yellow/red tight call, ref was well positioned though. If you think crokes 2nd was a square ball, spec savers I'm afraid." Doesn't matter now but check coverage from behind the goals, clearly at least two Crokes players in the square before ball and they had at least four in the square for the goal. Umpires should be allowed to make the call especially when the ref can't see because of the fog.

If it wasn't a free then you can be in the square before the ball… can't remember if it was from a free or open play

In the interests of justice and equality and ll.
Really, some people here really do need to be more like Malachy O'Rourke and less like the lad who spends the rest of his life telling everyone in the pub how he was cheated out of his under 14 league medal by the "townies."

Replying To ForeverBlue2: "If it wasn't a free then you can be in the square before the ball… can't remember if it was from a free or open play" The ball came in from open play.
The rule is that in open play, you can be in the square before the ball arrives there, so long as you only enter the square after the ball has been played in.
Impossible to tell from the way the camera behind the goal tracks the action whether or not this was the case, as the area directly in front of goal isn't in the shot as Walsh kicks the ball in.

The game should not have gone ahead, simple as that. Robbie Brennan hit the nail on the head afterwards when saying if it was a provincial championship match or a Division 2 league game, it would have been pulled. Yet this was an All Ireland Semi Final, and it ended up being basically not visible for people at the game, people watching on TV or more importantly the players on the pitch themselves.
How can we still end up with these games being played in January when the Inter County Season is finished up in July? They are cutting the legs off the Inter County season to run the club season yet the club season still can't finish within a calendar year! The GAA can't control the weather, but they can control when their games are played. There are to many needless competitions in both the Inter County and Club game that could be done away with and allow both the county and club season to breathe and still be completed within the calendar year.
The GAA rushed in and made massive decisions during a period of uncertainty during covid without fully thinking it through. County boards and provinces need to be brought into line and not just allowed run their competitions whatever way they like. Every club championship in the county should be starting at the same time, 2 weeks after the completion of the Inter County season.

That's easy to say when you don't have many players/clubs playing both codes.

Conditions were very dangerous in Thurles also yesterday in the part under the stand particulary down the Killinan end , pitch was like concrete in that corner, never thawed out . Often seen matchs cancelled for less there as well.

Was genuinely large young fella. He was 6ft when he was 14. Not an "accomplished hurler" but was effective in the manner of an old style Wexford full forward :-)
It was actually funny. We arrived out and there were some of our heroes on the line; Keaveny, Hanahoe, Heffo might have been. Next minute they were demanding a birth cert for the lad, having obviously done some recon on us.
Of course no one carried birth certs with them in 70s or since, so ref took their side. Strangely enough... I've forgotten all about it :-)

It wasnt a free and the rule is that if its not a free you are allowed enter the square before the ball , as long as you only enter square after ball is kicked. Perfectly valid goal , absolutely no arguing that.

I know the fixture scene is tight but in fairness to both teams that game probably should have been called off especially when it got worse as game went on.Fair play to both teams who despite poor tv pictures gave us a really good game.Glen just about deserved it but a great fightback by Crokes.Great credit to both teams.

I'd often defend such decisions myself as I know how difficult it can be to work according to a fixtures calendar, but quite frankly, between frost and fog, I was surprised that either match got the go-ahead yesterday.
I know referees shouldn't be influenced by such things when making a decision on whether or not to go ahead, but the bit of a cynic in me can't help wondering if the fact that there was live TV coverage of both matches might have been a factor?

You ay be sure it was. Commentators were even debating whether there would be extra time as planned when draw looked likely, ag dul insteach in am breise. Seemed to think that it had to be "finished."
What the mad urge to get everything over and done with at all costs is beyond me. Some of them be happier running an events company.
