Limerick Hurling thread 2024

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

This is going to be a huge year for limerick..if they manage 5 in a row fantastic but I've never had more enjoyment following any limerick team and I go back to the 70s..I really never saw this level of success coming and after 2018 I was as happy..I'd actually seen an all Ireland win and could remember it..I hope we can do 5 but let's get out of Munster first and I'd take 3rd place from the province now,it's a bloody minefield..we are top of the pile for now but majority of limerick supporters know it won't last forever,so hopefully this bunch can keep us going for a few more years with 5 or 6 more new boys adding to the strength already there..hopefully 2024 can be another great year..

You must be pretty sick of KK your next door neighbor winning All Irelands for years and years

Replying To journeyman:  "The round robin draw is much more difficult this year with Clare and Cork away and particularly with Clare away in the first game. Given that we could easily have been out last season in Munster I think the minds will be much more focused on the first 2 games with the league sacrificed as a result. We have yet to win a round robin game in Ennis so alot will hinge on this opening game. A win here will set things up nicely. The league is going to be a balancing act of getting game time into new players and also ensuring that the established players are match sharp. Given that we have Antrim, Westmeath and Dublin in the first 3 games and then Tipp and Galway in the last 2 at home without wanting to win the league we could easily end up in a semi final."
We have only beaten Clare in Ennis once since 1941 ....

Are you sure about that? According to Wikipedia (I know it's not a totally reliable source) Limerick beat Clare in Ennis, in the Munster Championship, in 1943, 1945 and 1990.

There is no beef between KK and Limerick that I have encountered, in fact the opposite when others were pointing fingers saying Limerick are this and that I felt they always had our backs as they understand more than anyone in relatively modern times what it takes for sustained success. When you see what goes on both on and off the field when we play the likes of Clare you get the opposite end. When Limerick play in Ennis this April it's going to be raucous.

Yes indeed I was there in 90.

Since 1945. I was there in '90, when Mick Barron gave a massive display of Full Back play.

That's right. His first championship appearance since the 1976 Munster final.

Ard Scoil Ris into Harty final after narrow win today in Kilmallock, only 6 Limerick starters ( 9 from Clare ) is a bit of a reverse of previous years .

Can someone confirm that? 14 years between one championship appearance and the next seems strange and is surely something that would be common knowledge, had it happened!

OTM or Slayer, is there any truth in this poster's claim?

I've checked the records on this. Mike Barron made 4 championship appearances for Limerick. 4th July 1976 v Clare, 1st August 1976 v Cork, 13th May 1990 v Clare and 10 June 1990 v Tipperary.

Waterford Football goalkeeper Darren Mulhearne was called up to the panel and made his championship debut in 2019. His last time on the senior panel before that game was in 1989, although he didn't make an appearance then.

Thank you C4000 and also Bruffgael for bringing this to my attention!

That's totally amazing about Mulhearne.

Yes indeed, when the Tipp man should have walked as well, but of course there was Cork Officials there that day.

Absolutely true. Saw him play in three of the four and was away for the last one.

I think he emigrated for a while after 1976

Strange one moving Limerick V Antrim league game to Thurles , would Kilmallock or Newcastle West even not have been an idea and attract a half decent crowd to the fixture out the county and give a lift to these towns ?
Going to reduce further what was already a modest crowd by bringing it to Thurles ( be less than a thousand at it) . only benefit is it might give some lesser lights a game in Thurles & reduce Antrims travel but Limerick fans deserve their game at a Limerick ground.

Seen a clip of the Harty game in Kilmallock last Saturday on Clubber's social media, pitch was in terrible condition. Can't speak for the other venues, might be an issue regards season ticket holders, on that given Limerick have over 3k of those surely more than 1k would travel to Thurles.

Seems abit strange all right moving it to Thurles. I don't think I have ever seen this before moving a home game outside the county. Probably moved there on health and safety grounds. With U16s free for League Games probably Kilmallock would be too small. Also with Limerick having such huge support now, no Munster League games played and no other home league game until March 9th it was probably deemed the safer option. I know Antrim would not be a huge draw but it's a long time since the All Ireland last July and supporters would want to go to this one. If 3k tickets for Rathkeale on a Wed night in Jan sell out in a few hours there is hugh demand out there.

Just said I'd post this here as there isn't an active Tipp thread, think its an absolute scandal that yourselves and Tipp weren't allowed to wear the jersey's with the Dillon Quirke Fountain logo on the front for the challenge game yesterday. Shows how out of touch some decision makers in Croke Park really are.
