Should this match have gone ahead ? And when it was a draw at full time would a replay not be fairer than playing in insane conditions people were warned to not drive unnecessary journeys ??

Rain has never stopped football. Scotstown and Glen also served up an entertaining game. Michael Hurley getting injured early on was a blow to 'Haven, but they hung in there, and Damien Cahalane was the hero in the penalty shootout. He saved a penalty and scored 2. I believe his history as underage goalie with Greenmount was the reason he donned the goalkeeper jersey for penalties. He's an excellent footballer!!

All games should be stopped in bad weather, soccer, rugby, American Football. Imagine asking players to go out in the winter, or train in the wind and rain. What cruel folk GAA administrators must be.
Will someone think of the children?

If the pitch was deemed safe and the weather conditions were safe for no warnings not to travel then yes it should.
Ref could have called it off at any stage if they felt conditions were unsafe for play to continue.

Don't think a replay would have been fair either and likely weather wpuld be very poor for replay as well..

And why was the TV camera in the uncovered stand?

The penalties are not an issue. That issue was decided well beforehand.

The issue that might be questioned is not the actual pitch or weather conditions in relation to it. The bigger issue is traveling to such a game, when more relevant authorities advise not to go.

Where does player health and welfare start and end? Let's say, God forbid, that a player was injured or worse on the way to/from the game because he had to go play for his team: falling tree or something.

Where does the duty of care start/end with the GAA? It's only when an actual case case ever happens that the GAA will find out the extent of its liability to its players (and perhaps vicariously to the supporters who travel to watch games).

Horrendous day for football but fair play to both sides for serving up an intriguing battle in those conditions.

Time to toughen up and grow a pair. I assume you live in the USA, and like me in the Northeast have got used to traveling in adverse conditions. Bit of rain shouldn't affect the average Irishman as they are well used to it. Traveling around Ireland is easy as traffic is nonexistent in most parts. Again, congratulations to Damien Cahalane, the hero of the game, and Niall would be very proud.

The camera was there to show the tiny crowd in the stand instead of a huge empty terrace.

Exactly! It was an exciting game that came down to the wire. Some of the kicking was excellent, including two by Mark Collins from distance. Castlehaven followed their tradition, and never gave up. Likewise Glen vs Scotstown was excellent, and only for a good save at the death by the Glen keeper, game would also have gone to extra time. Football needs close contests like this!

I have to admit I couldn't believe match was fixed for limerick..surely going by where both clubs situated Killarney would have been the obvious choice..would I be right in saying about a 6 hour round trip for both clubs..

Killarney? Seriously? That's in the Kingdom last time I heard. Would be a home game for Dingle. Not many traveled in any case.

Killarney was ruled out due to no floodlights.

Let's be respectful to each other's comments here. To be fair, foreveryoung was talking about public safety and travelling and it was a very long journey to and from in atttricious weather conditions. Why on earth did the Gaa drag both clubs up to Limerick city? Both clubs woukd have supporters from as young as 5 yrs old and as old as well maybe 90 yrs old and they all have to get to these matches somehow as well as everybody in between.. Club football is deep and and these people support through thick and thin and days like today don't happen without them.. Young lads would play football in any conditions which they did very impressively today but today was much more than a bit rain and looking at each parish as a whole, Castlehaven supporters had to make a round trip of approx 330km and Dingle supporters 306km. Is this safe on bad roads? Is this not very irresponsible of the GAA to expect this when there was a far easier halfway ground? And Ryanteam, our back roads might not be full of traffic but on days like today they are very treacherous so please look at the big picture here. Finally I think penalties are an absolute shocking way to end any Gaa match. Plenty of time for a replay. The football on display today was an absolute credit to both clubs in hurricane conditions. Both sets of players just went for it, displaying pure courage and honest football which in my opinion is better than any county football I've witnessed in recent years. Its a pity there had to be a loser today but club football was the real winner
