John Maughaun saying the Mayo County final last Sunday was the worst County Football final ever which seems to a common concesus reading match reports, equally the Cork football final got similar lambasting from reporters as well last sunday and the Laois Football final a couple of weeks ago was also quoted as terrible hard to watch. funny enough the Wexford Final and semi finals were three decent matches - the rest of the championship was fairly forgettable. and relatively speaking the standard in wexford would be poor. I think the better clubs- (More successful) are the clubs that can defend better. and therefore two teams of a weaker standard (poorer defending) produce more open games. hence the decent games in Wexford and the poor games in Mayo and Cork - but you'll find that the Cork and Mayo champs will go far into their provincial competitions. bystanderbill (Wexford) - Posts: 45 - 31/10/2023 16:13:12 2511079 Link 0 |

Funny enough in Cork, the Intermediate final and Junior finals, including the Carbery divisional final on Friday were superb games. The Senior final was far more cagey, which is unusual for Nemo v Castlehaven. That being said, Castlehaven deserved the win and had that bit more up top. Whilst it was disappointing largely, it was still entertaining with some good scores (20 in total). I would have connections in Ballina, so keenly watched that as well and I have to say, it was atrocious football. I think the quality in Mayo championship has been particularly bad all year in my opinion. The weather does have a baring here though. We've had terrible weather and that has not helped. It's a good job Ballina have home advantage in two weeks, because if they played like that in London, there could have been a massive shock. That was a semi final. The Pats beat Cooley. I was at the game in Dowdallshill. This year's final was a very good game.

Mayo senior championship was poor all year. The intermediate and junior championships were much more open and entertaining. If the next year or two produce the same "quality" then I think we can press the panic button. One year does not tell a story though. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11405 - 01/11/2023 19:49:28 2511223 Link 0 |
Joe brolly never needs a reason to make derogatory remarks about mayo football, so I'm looking forward to reading his take on this lol Galway9801 (Galway) - Posts: 1942 - 01/11/2023 20:13:12 2511224 Link 0 |
This years Longford final was deplorable. So much so that a swat team is being assembled to hunt down and destroy any DVD's sold so there is no visual record for future generations. My own club won, i'm happy about it, but it was deplorable, from two decent sides. LongfordgaaAbú (Longford) - Posts: 573 - 02/11/2023 11:28:04 2511268 Link 1 |
The 1946 Longford Senior Football Championship Final went to a replay after finishing as enthralling 0-00 to 0-00 between Ballymahon & Dromard, Dromard went on to win the replay. LongfordSham (Longford) - Posts: 116 - 02/11/2023 12:27:09 2511281 Link 2 |

Was not altogether unknown for early games to finish on very low scorelines, but that's the first scoreless draw i ever hear of! Mayo once famously held Dublin to a scoreless second half in Castlebar in early noughties. In first ever adult championship hurling match I played in we were beaten by something like 6 - 19 to a 0 -1. I scored the point after the rather unpleasant chap who was marking me had wandered off late on to have a chat with the umpire. I got roundly abused for not going for a goal. Great tale Barney. At least you were top scorer for your team. All jokes aside though i hate to see absolute hammering in games. Its totally demoralizing for the beaten teams.Imo it does not do much for the victors either .

The 1921/22 Sigerson Cup final finished UCG 0-1, UCC 0-0. Furthermore, UCG got a walkover in the semifinal when Queen's didn't make the trip to Galway, so they won the competition by scoring the grand total of one point! Tacaí Liatroma (Leitrim) - Posts: 1126 - 05/11/2023 14:52:14 2511575 Link 1 |
