Replying To galwayford:  "I think Irish rugby is on a roll. It has broken through. France 2023, was it's Italia '90 moment imho. People like me, who had never watched rugby really- watched rugby. And became interested. Interesting times ahead for the GAA. Watching the Limerick county final (Na Piarsaigh V Patrickswell) at an empty Gaelic grounds was not a good look imho. Not having the Munster hurling championship on RTE free to air was madness too. The GAA Hq, have become a little bit out of touch imho. Anyway, interesting times ahead for GAA and Irish rugby and FAI too."
Don't think it was an empty stadium galwayford⁷
What we saw on television was an empty open side. It was a bad day weatherwise so anyone there crammed into the covered stand. As the cameras were shooting from the stand all we could see was the empty open side.
Looked bad austecicaly but it wasn't possible to mount cameras on that side. I would imagine that the Mackey stand was full or near full. Therefore there was probably a crowd of maybe 8 to 10 thousand. Not bad for atrocious weather conditions.
Agree about not showing the munster games on free to air. That was unforgivable.
Regarding the rugby, I like you and many more watched the games with interest, hoping that Ireland could advance further than we had before.
Alas no, it wasn't to be. However it will mean that youngsters will take to the oval ball. To what extent I don't know. This topic has been extensively written about on this forum so I won't say anymore about it.
I would say the FAI situation will be interesting alright. When you see how poor the national team is and the top teams in the league of Ireland been beaten by weak Icelantic and was it Luxembourg sides in the lowest competition in Europe, that sums it up.⁹

I would have thought that after a few grand slams, and our provinces success in the Heineken cup over the last 20 odd years, that if anything a hyped, yet ultimately disappointing world cup showing would be far from a "breakthrough" moment.

Half a million people lined Dublin to welcome back the soccer team in 1990,, hardly any comparison to the rugby team this year in fairness.

Rugby is a bandwagon sport in Ireland. Deep down, most couldn't give a ****.

Firstly the rugby team refused a homecoming when they were offered one. They wanted to be greeted by only their friends and families. Which was a decision I respect tbh.
Secondly rugby is very much a minority sport here in Ireland. While soccer and GAA are the mainstream sports, and played by most young people equally around here , GAA in summer, soccer in the winter. Also in 1990 the country was in a heap, and the lads lifted the whole place with their exploits.

I actually think that decision is reflective of the sport in society to be honest.

I'm not sure they really want people from outside 2 or 3 area codes

No new clubs formed in what time frame.
whats the evidence club rugby is at an all time low.

Your post is honest, praiseworthy and to the point.

I had a one-track mind when it came to sport until covid and the lock down came, then I started thinking and reading about other sports, now I embrace all sports and at the same time support one. I read about Mick Hipwell and others, I am very much aware of Bernard Jackman, and I know Sean O' Brien although not too personal, they put Carlow on the national and international sporting map.

From a distance I know a couple of lads on the Ireland U 20 International panel, I followed them very closely through the U 20 world cup competition right up to the final against France, although we fell short at the final hurdle, I was very proud of them, but enough of that, - - -

For the sporting record.

Andy Farrell was voted head coach of the world cup tournament.

Ireland got 5 players on the world cup dream team.

France also got 5 and the All Blacks got 4 on the same team.

South Africa the current world cup champions got 1. ??

I keep saying we are a great little country for sport, and it shouldn't be overlooked or dismissed, rather embrace it

Replying To SixtiesKid:  "Rugby will never gain any upper hand. The worldwide audience is very low and the recent interest in Ireland is the usual band wagonners who jump aboard regularly. Remember Italia 90 and Jack and the lads. No long term gain for soccer.
Also Rugby has the worst referees ever seen. No two agree on the rules and I lost count the number of times the commentator questioned a key decision. In the final the referee gave a penalty and before it was taken said he made a mistake. It was then taken and South Africa got 3 points. They won by 1.
A total joke.
The GAA caters for both male and female at local level up and down the country. No other sport does this. Look at the growth of the GAA in Dublin for this reason precisely."
Worldwide audience very low as opposed to what?
People are so dismissive unfairly and calling anyone "bandwagoners"
You dont see too many from other countries do that.
Rugby has the worst referees going??? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Rugby does have differences in how some laws are refereed but its far better than the way the rules and refs are treated in many sporqts.

Silly team, that dreamy one. The SA backrow twins Pieter and Steph du Toit should both have made it, and neither did. Those 'two' were everywhere! Some man for one man, the pair of them. That dream team was a lame hatchet job on SA, and not worthy of mention.

The World Cup dream team was an embarrassment as was Farrell getting coach of the year.

That dream team has 5 Irish players. The team represents a team drawn from whole year, and not just the World Cup. The GAA all stars was like that years ago, but in recent years has only been drawn from All Ireland finalists. Meaningless exercise nowadays!

it wasnt a world cup dream team. it was team of the year. not simply the world cup.
farrell getting coach of year was ridiculous.

Why? Ireland only lost 1 game all year, and that by only a score. Its not coach of the world cup he won.

It's the equivalent of having a heap of lads on the All Star GAA team after winning the league but getting knocked out at the quarters. One SA player? Absolutely ridiculous.

There is a lot of ambiguity in how the game is refereed ranging from head high tackles to scrums. How can they get it so wrong in scrums bearing in mind that most of the time movement is no more than 1 to 2m.

It may be better than soccer but that does not say it id good and all these Refs are supposed to be top of the pile-what is the bottom of the pile like?

Strange the way people think, in my opinion with the 5 already selected along with those I would have included Jamison Gibson Park and James Lowe.
