I say ban the payment and the journey men would soon stop going state side" God above a lot of these players were students when covid hit and couldn't go to States to play and most of them might get their ticket and handy job but that's all and they enjoy it.It's an experience.They are normally back for championship and if not, it is a chance for other players at their home club to get experience.Why punish a player because they want to go abroad for few weeks of the Summer?And also if they are playing and training abroad, their home club should not punish them for not being around to train with them by not playing them when they get home. Club players go out every Sunday and put their bodies on the line for the sport. Try telling a bricklayer who breaks a leg that he couldn't have gone to play and pay in America. Have no problem with players going to the US and getting expenses but the fact that many clubs are without players atm who have travelled abroad shows that it makes more sense to flip and modify the split season and have intercounty played for all the summer months with club commencing in September when most of the players concerned will be returning after the end of the NY gaa championship to return to college. For instance Galway club championships are now underway and I'd imagine that a number of clubs will be missing players for another 4 or 5 weeks and will have to play some important club championship games without them. In 1989 the late Tony Keady was banned for playing in New York, while two Tipp players played in the SAME game. That and a crooked ref from Wexford cost Galway the All Ireland. Bans in my book mean we dont/cant deal with a situation so we are going to exclude it. The GAA is not a hobby, its a product that is heavily commercialized and IMHO is slowly moving towards professionalism. Players are the only ones at IC level that are not getting paid. If they want to go play in US, UK or Oz then it should be right to do so. If they get expenses, "jobs" and free accommodation so what, what business is it of the GAA or any of the clubs back home, Players do not have contracts or any commitments to club or county, until they do they have every right to leave and play for whoever they feel like. I understood that the rule is that if you play championship football for any club you cannot play championship football for any other club in or outside country within the same championship year. From what I understand that it is the case for example between teams in the uk and ireland i.e. if you play for a club in Ireland in championship you cannot play for a team in London in championship in the same calendar year. You have the luxury of not having to finish your club hurling championship by October to suit Provincial club championships. So you can run your championships over a longer time period. Even starting in July our players are playing championship near enough every weekend for nearly 4 months if their club makes the finals. Tomsmith here I feel that before these transfers should be sanctioned that the home Club should get 50 % of what the money bags are offering to entice these players over to the USA. Playing in the US semi pro " Championships" obviously doesn't prevent one from playing in the home County Championship under the Rules (temp sanction thingy).
